To meet business growth we now have a new opportunity for a meteorologist to join our team in Birmingham providing forecasts to our clients. You should have a good level of operational forecasting experience supported by good theoretical knowledge of meteorology and of course a fanatical passion for weather.
With a degree in meteorology or a related science combined with hands-on forecasting experience, you will be able to demonstrate your ability to work on a number of tasks simultaneously and deliver forecasts to tight deadlines. You should combine a strong customer focus with the ability to translate the day's main weather features into forecast briefs. Your oral and written communication will therefore be excellent, good data analysis skills are essential and you must be familiar with using weather-related software. WSI's forecasting operations service our customers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and so you must be willing to work the required shifts.

Trainee Meteorologist

We have an opportunity for a bright and enthusiastic graduate to start a meteorology career in forecasting in our European forecast operations in Birmingham. Comprehensive training and mentoring will be given in WSI?s proprietary systems and applications, forecasting techniques and utilisation of WSI?s advanced forecast models and workstation technology. You will also gain experience by participating in daily Forecast Centre weather briefings and discussions involving European synoptic scale trends, model bias and expected developments in the short and medium term forecast periods.
You should have a good first degree or higher degree in Meteorology, in which you have gained a solid understanding of theoretical and practical meteorology. Experience in forecasting through work experience or extra-curricular activities is of particular interest. We certainly expect you to demonstrate a deep interest in weather.
You must be able to communicate and interact well both within a team environment and with external clients. You will be able to effectively carry out a number of tasks at the same time. Your data analysis and collation skills will be of the highest order and you will be able to prioritise and meet deadlines in a fast-paced operational environment.
Within WSI, forecasters work on a flexible shift pattern covering 24 hours per day seven days per week and you should be comfortable participating fully in a 24 hour rotating shift pattern.
The starting salary will be ?20,000 per annum with shift and overtime allowances paid in addition. The salary will be reviewed after successful completion of the six-month training period. In addition, an excellent range of benefits is offered including pension contributions, life assurance and ill health income protection.
