Our Research and Development team within the Catastrophe Risk Management Department is looking for an outstanding candidate to fill a new position. This challenging and rewarding role will involve the advancement and development of Aspen's fundamental knowledge on all aspects of storm risk, independently of licensed vendor catastrophe models. The position will focus on the following perils: tropical cyclones, extratropical cyclones, tornados, hail and flood, mainly from a reinsurance point of view. The main duties of the role will include:

- Evaluating appropriate vendor models (e.g. RMS, EQE, AIR) for storm and flood risk, from the scientific background to the loss output.
- Advancing Aspen's tropical cyclone research and development through collaboration with academic partners and in-house model development.
- Severe weather and flood event reporting and analysis.
- Providing scientific background on weather risks in key exposure zones worldwide.
- Following the scientific development of severe weather science and vulnerabilities.

The successful candidate will be qualified to degree level or similar in Atmospheric sciences or climatology and will possess strong statistical, analysis and decision making skills with commercial acumen. The individual will be a highly motivated self-starter who enjoys using his/her initiative, being regarded as an effective team player with the ability to work under pressure and adapt to changes in a fluid commercial environment. An advanced command of the English language (both oral and written), is required with advanced knowledge of any kind of data analysis or statistical tools (e.g. R, Matlab, or IDL). Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Internet software and basic knowledge of programming, databases (especially MS SQL Server), GIS, and vendor models would be an advantage.

The California Institute of Technology (CalTech) Postdoctoral Scholars Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) invites applicants for a postdoctoral research position in the area of regional cliamte model (RCM) evaluation. The successful applicants will join a research team at JPL/CalTech focused on the use of satelite and other observations to evaluate and improve RCMs. Immediate emphasis is on the continued development and application of our Regional Climate Model Evaluation System (RCMES). Specific applications include the U.S. National Climate Assessment and the Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX), including CORDEX-Africa, CORDEX-Arctic and CORDEX-N. America, also referred to as the North American Regional Climate Change Assessment Program (NARCCAP).

Applicants should have a recent Ph.D. in atmospheric or ocean sciences, or a closely related field. They should have a strong background in atmosphere or ocean modeling and/or data analysis. Experience with regional climate modeling and with the application of satellite data products to model evaluation is desirable. Expertise in areas such as the hydrological cycle, weather extremes and climate variability are also desirable. The appointments are contingent upon completion of the Ph.D.

The annual starting salary for a recent Ph.D. is approximately $52,000 and can vary according to qualification. Postdoctoral scholars positions are awarded initially for a one-year period. Appointments may be renewed in one-year increments for a maximum of two additional years.

Land Surface Modelling -Agent Based Modelling of Heat, Water and Carbon Exchanges in Cities

Urban areas are locations where many people are at enhanced risk to a wide range of environmental hazards. This results in part because of the population density of cities; the location of many urban areas near rivers, coasts etc; and the conditions generated by the cities themselves (e.g., heat stress and poor air quality). The focus of this study is the climate/atmosphere of cities, specifically the effects of the behaviours and actions of those living in cities on key exchanges of water, energy (heat) and carbon. Agent based modelling will be used to develop parameter specifications for a state-of-the-art urban surface-atmosphere exchange model (SUEWS). The linked model will then be used to investigate the impact of human decisions on environmental risks (heat stress and drought in particular) and to consider interventions and strategies for alternative outcomes.

One fully-funded NERC PhD-Studentship is available for new 3-year Doctoral Research projects in Earth and Environmental Sciences starting September 2012. Funding covers all tuition fees, a tax-free stipend of approximately ?15,590 pa (including London Allowance), and a research support budget of approximately ?9,000.

We are looking for motivated students with quantitative skills and a strong interest in Environmental Sciences, with MSc-degree level training in a relevant discipline.

Four Research Associate positions are available within the Research
Cluster led by Professor Martin Wooster at King's College London,
concentrating on the study of biomass burning using satellite Earth
Observation, simulation modelling and in situ and remote sensing
measurement techniques.

Posts are variously related to the UK NERC National Centre for Earth
Observation (www.nceo.ac.uk) and to the development of the fire
emissions component of the GMES Atmospheric Monitoring and Forecasting
service under the MACC-II EU FP7 project (www.gmes-atmosphere.eu).
Ongoing research topics to which the post holders will contribute to
include exploitation of thermal remote sensing data, EO active fire
algorithm development and validation, fire simulation modelling and
modelling of smoke atmospheric transport, exploitation of atmospheric
spectroscopy data for smoke aerosol and trace gas emissions studies, and
deployment of flux towers, field spectroscopy and UAV imaging methods at
experimental fires.

There are opportunities to contribute to a number of ongoing projects,
and research (see http://wildfire.geog.kcl.ac.uk/). Publication examples
can be found at tinyurl.com/mwooster. Applicants should have research
experience in one or more of the following areas: remote sensing, EO
algorithm development, satellite fire product use and validation, fire
spread or CFD modelling, atmospheric spectroscopy, use of atmospheric
chemistry/transport models, deployment of in situ measurement devices
during field campaigns. An understanding of biomass burning processes
and effects would be useful, and candidates are expected to be able to
work with large datasets, to write computer code (ideally IDL and/or
Python) and to be able to communicate clearly in English.

The Marie-Curie EU FP7 funded Initial Training Network Learning about
Interactive Networks in Climate (LINC) invites applications for

10 Early-Stage Researchers (ESR) at the PhD student level

3 Experienced Researchers (ER) at the post-doctoral level

Improving our understanding of the Earth's complex climate phenomena,
such as El Ni?o, has a huge economic and social impact for present and
future generations, and can underpin advances in areas as diverse as
energy, environment, agricultural, etc. The LINC network aims at
training young researchers in the complete set of skills required to
undertake a career in physics and geosciences with expertise in
climatology, networks and complex systems. The training program will
combine recent advances in network methodologies with state-of-the-
art climate understanding.

The LINC consortium comprises 6 academic partners and 3 private-sector
partners that have wide expertise on complex systems (network
construction, nonlinear time series analysis), environment and
geosciences (nonlinear processes in the oceans and atmosphere) and
commercial applications (climate risk analysis, using climate networks
to predict extreme events). The skills to be imparted during the LINC
training program can be applied across a wide range of
interdisciplinary fields. In LINC the mobility of researchers will be
aided by secondments at academic and commercial partners, a series of
workshops, two schools and a final conference.

Keywords: Complex systems, Complex networks, Network theory,
Climatology, Environmental science, Nonlinear dynamics, Physics of
Ocean and Atmosphere, Time series analysis, Tipping points, Climate

Job Description

The primary objective of this position is to investigate MetOcean parameters for criteria reports. The position involves extensive analysis work and report writing. There will also be research work in developing methods and systems for improvements of MetOcean Forecasting services. There is today a strong need in the oil business of proper criteria estimation, and StormGeo need to strengthen our competence within this area.
The position is permanent and start date is as soon as possible.

Qualifications

- MSc or PhD in Statistics, Engineering, Oceanography, Meteorology and preferably a specialization/experience in deriving MetOcean design and operating criteria for offshore industry.

- High resourcefulness with strong problem solving instincts and close attention to details.

- Team working skills and the ability to work with little technical supervision in a multidiscipline environment.

- A high level of fluency in written and spoken English Awareness of current statistical techniques and MetOcean standards and their application, and state-of-the-art in MetOcean research.

- Good programming skills preferable in the statistical software R.

- Knowledge of design criteria standards like ISO-19901, DNV RC-C205 or HSE 2001/10

- Knowledge of extreme value theory

- Good knowledge with an interpreted computer language (Perl, Python, etc.), SQL and shell scripting is an advantage

- Knowledge of scripting is an advantage

- You work in a structured and systematic manner which makes it easy for you to meet deadlines. It is decisive for success in the position that you are goal-oriented and quality-conscious.

Main Description
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) offers the opportunity for suitably qualified persons to join multi-disciplinary teams at Halley (76?S, 26?W) or Rothera (68?S, 68?W) stations in Antarctica. This is science with a difference. As part of a small, highly motivated team, the successful candidates will be spending a year in the Antarctic, with the possibility of an extension. Life here is like nowhere else, so you must be ready to take on all the challenges that it offers. With the unparalleled beauty of the Antarctic, you will find this a profitable experience in more ways than one. The primary role of the successful candidates will be to make observations and to maintain and operate a suite of scientific instruments for studying the atmosphere and also to carry out quality assurance on the resulting environmental data.

Halley research station primarily concentrates on atmospheric research from ground level into space and the successful candidate will face the challenges of a newly commissioned station. Halley is an important observatory studying the Antarctic ozone "hole". The Meteorology and Ozone Monitoring Unit (MOMU) makes regular measurements of the stratospheric ozone content, and participates in international projects to measure trace chemicals, which are instrumental in the processes leading to ozone depletion. Other background pollution studies include taking snow and air samples for later isotopic and trace gas analysis in the UK. The Clean Air Sector Laboratory (CASLab) is the UK's primary research facility for polar atmospheric chemistry. BAS operates a programme of routine measurements, as well as enhanced science campaigns, to study this clean background atmosphere, and how it links to wider global processes.

The research station at Rothera studies a broader range of science, although notably without the atmospheric chemistry component described above.. Meteorological support is also provided for summer aircraft operations. A number of remote automatic weather stations located along the Antarctic Peninsula and on Alexander Island are serviced from the station. There is also a weather satellite image receiver, which is used to aid local weather forecasting.

The stations both make meteorological observations using an interactive, PC-based Automatic Weather Station, designed to facilitate data gathering and analysis and may make more frequent observations for aircraft. Regular upper air soundings are made using balloon-borne radio sondes. Additional observations and measurements are also made throughout the day. These are duties for the Atmospheric Scientists at both Halley and Rothera.

The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for maintaining the atmospheric science equipment in good working order, maintaining the quality of the data and managing its transfer to electronic storage. Each scientist is a member of a small multi-disciplinary team of scientists and support staff; and as such, they are expected to be adaptable and work on other programmes and to take their share of general base work. As the station is isolated for most of the year, the ability to work without detailed supervision and to solve problems as they arise is paramount.
Qualifications: A degree or HND in physics, chemistry, geophysics, meteorology, electronic engineering or a related subject. Alternatively, a minimum of two years practical meteorological or electronics experience, supported by A levels or HNC in Physics or Electronics. An ability to solve problems and to be flexible are also key characteristics of the job.
Duration: The appointment will be for approximately 18 months, commencing in July 2012 in Cambridge. The successful candidates will undertake appropriate specialist training in all aspects of the job, prior to travelling to the Antarctic in the autumn of 2012 and returning in spring 2014.

PhD Opportunity in Regional Climate Modelling.

Project Title: Cleaner Air - A warmer Europe?

Project Outline: The European Commission, under the Clean Air For Europe (CAF? ) initiative and the Thematic Strategy on Air Pollution, aims to reduce excess mortality rates and mitigate against reduced life span across Europe resulting from air pollution. Specific targets are set for air pollution exceedence levels,, reduced mortality rates, and increased life span by 2020. These targets are developed with the best economic cost in mind and through Integrated Assessment Modelling. While clean air is good for public health, it appears that it is bad for greenhouse-gas warming. It is estimated that aerosol (particulate matter) haze and cloud layers have off-set the greenhouse-gas warming by 50% over the last century and estimates, using a global climate model suggests accelerate rates of global warming to the tune of 0.3-0.4*C per decade over the next 2 decades or so. We propose to quantify the impact on European scale warming rates, with particular focus on Ireland, of current air pollution targets. The climate scenario will be 2020 and it will be evaluate using the REgional MOdel with Tracer Extension (REMOTE). REMOTE is a regional climate model based on the global climate model ECHAM4 and further developed to include atmospheric composition. Specifically, it contains an updated version of the atmospheric chemistry module RADM2 and aerosol-cloud microphysics interactions, advanced aerosol formation, transformation and dynamics (M7 - seven mode modal model capable of handling natural and anthropogenic, primary and secondary aerosol species).

Duration: 3.5 Years

for the project MyOcean (Prototype Operational Continuity for the GMES Ocean Monitoring and Forecasting Service, http://www.myocean.eu.org/).

The department of Data Analysis and Data Assimilation at the Institute for Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht hosts a number of highly motivated end experienced researchers in the field of numerical modelling of regional coastal circulation, surface waves, sediment transport, data assimilation and remote sensing.

The department is partner in MyOcean, and the leader of R&D Work package, which aims at undertaking common scientific and technological developments. Among the major tasks are

- regional applications of the NEMO modelling framework,
- developing improved data products and advanced assimilation methods enabling objective assessment of uncertainties in state estimates and predictions,
- coupling the ocean and wave models in a regional forecast environment.

Specific tasks of researcher will include NEMO developments in European tidal and semi enclosed basins (North Sea and Baltic Sea). The researcher will also develop new data exploitation strategies, investigate the complementarities between different data sources (e. g. coastal HF-radars, remotely-sensed ocean colour, FerryBox) and the outcome of their use in operational services. In the field of regional ocean-wave coupling impact assessment of the coupling with focus on shallow water will be provided, as well as analysis of the impact on forecasts.

The successful applicants will have a Ph.D. in Physics, Mathematics, Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Science or related disciplines. A strong background in modelling and programming, in particular ocean and/or atmosphere models is desirable. Good skills in scientific programming (FORTRAN) as well as working with computers (Unix/Linux) are expected, as well as good knowledge of the English language (written and oral).

Appointment will begin as soon as possible.

The Department has 76 faculty members and enrolls about 70 PhD students from more than 30 countries. The research spans the whole spectrum, from theoretical underpinnings to applied systems development. There is extensive national and international collaboration with academia and industry all around the world.
Information about the division

The Department of Earth and Space Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology is active within environmental research, involving the development of mathematical models for interpreting global Earth-observation data sets and for Earth-system modelling. The PhD project will be a joint venture with the Research Department at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI).

The PhD project is unique in offering interdisciplinary research within both environmental modelling, Earth-observation, and inverse modelling techniques. The collaboration between Chalmers University of Technology and SMHI combines work within curiosity-driven and applied research environments. The majority of the candidate's working time will be devoted to his/her own research studies. The project offers an opportunity to spend time at both institutions.

Job description

The PhD candidate's research will be devoted to employing satellite observations of atmospheric trace gases and aerosols to constrain and improve atmospheric chemical transport models. The goal is to obtain a better description of atmospheric chemical transport and aerosol dynamic processes for Earth-system climate modelling. The research will involve both modelling studies, analysis of satellite data, and inverse modelling of remote sensing observations by chemical data assimilation.

The majority of your working time is devoted to your own research studies. A PhD student is also expected to develop own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, the position will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties. The employment is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with a Master's degree in physics, mathematics, astronomy, meteorology, or a comparable qualification. You should have an interest in learning how to work with large numerical modelling systems. A good knowledge of written and spoken English is required.

Desired additional qualifications:
? Experience in a higher programming language, especially Fortran
? Experience with Unix/Linux and script programming.

*Real-Time Global Atmospheric Modelling of Wildfire Emissions Transport*

Biomass burning represents a globally significant flux of material
(carbon compounds, other trace gases and aerosols) transported from the
land to the atmosphere. A major new modelling system designed to
monitor and forecast the atmospheric impact of biomass burning in near
real time has been developed by combining an atmospheric
chemistry-transport model with operational satellite remote sensing
observations. This PhD project will evaluate and ultimately improve the
system's accuracy by undertaking a series of case studies of major
biomass burning events conducted across the primary eco-region types
affected (boreal, temperate, tropical etc.) and which will be validated
against independent sources (e.g. atmospheric chemistry and aerosol
observations made from satellite and ground-based systems). The aim
will be to analyse the system performance, develop any identified
improvements (e.g. in how biomass burning emissions are represented in
the atmospheric transport model) and to provide the testing and
validation needed to help deliver the final operational system. The PhD
will be conducted in collaboration with ECMWF, and the student will be
provided with access to state of the art supercomputer resources in
order to perform their own model runs outside of the near real time
system (e.g. to analyse past events). It is expected that there will be
opportunities to attend one or several field experiments where biomass
burning can be observed and characterised 'in person'.

The Center for Energy Research, University of California, San Diego, is
seeking one highly qualified scientist as postdoctoral researcher starting
immediately. The position is part of Department of Energy (DOE), California
Energy Commission (CEC), and California Public Utilities Commission (CSI)
funded projects to study solar energy grid integration and solar energy
forecasting. The goal is avoid or reduce integration costs of high
penetration of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems into the electric grid.
Further information about the Kleissl Solar Resources and Forecasting Lab

http://solar.ucsd.edu.

The postdoctoral fellow will conduct analysis of data from a unique solar
resource observatories throughout California, at the 48 MW Copper Mountain
Photovoltaic plant, and at UC San Diego. Forecasts of PV output will be
generated using sky imaging instruments and the Weather Research and
Forecasting (WRF) model with a focus on image processing, radiative
transfer, and data assimilation. The successful candidate will work with
colleagues at NREL, Sandia National Lab, DOE, and industry on joint projects
and present at national and international conferences such as IEEE Power
Engineering Society, American Solar Energy Society, and American
Meteorological Society.

Strong programming skills (preferably MATLAB) are required. Experience with
one or several of the following would be beneficial: radiative transfer
models, satellite remote sensing, data assimilation, numerical weather
prediction, solar or meteorological measurements, electric power flow
models. Applicants should hold a PhD degree in a relevant discipline
(atmospheric science, meteorology, physics, environmental, electrical, or
mechanical engineering) that was conferred no more than 4 years ago or have

JOB ALERT: PROFESSOR OF RISK AND DISASTER REDUCTION

Hours: Full time
Salary (inclusive of London allowance): The appointment will be at a Professorial level. The salary will be negotiable on the professorial scale but not less than ?62,110 per annum.

Duties and Responsibilities
The new Institute for Risk and Disaster Reduction (IRDR) aims to provide a focus for UCL?s risk and disaster reduction activities, which span earth and space science, mathematics and statistics, engineering and development planning, population health, anthropology, ethics and laws. We are seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to provide leadership in the Institute, develop world-class research programmes and contribute to advanced teaching and knowledge exchange activities.

Key Requirements
The Chair will have an outstanding record of academic research and publication in i) geological disasters (i.e., earthquakes, volcanoes and related hazards), ii) hydrometeorological disasters (i.e., windstorms, floods and droughts), and/or iii) disaster risk reduction (disaster risk management, resilience, recovery), and will be able to work collaboratively with an inter-disciplinary approach.
