Project title : REU Site: Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates
in the Mammoth Cave/Upper Green River Watershed

The unifying environmental theme of this REU site is focused on land use
and land cover and its impacts on water in a karst hydrogeologic,
geomorphic and atmospheric context. The research components are all
directly related to water quality, contaminant transport, and
near-surface atmospheric water cycling, with the Upper Green River
Watershed as the primary field site during the first summer.

For this announcement, we are specifically looking for two undergraduate
students (one each) to work on the following projects: (experience with
basic statistics and GIS is preferred)

1) Warm-season Thunderstorm and Precipitation Climatology and
Classification (Dr. Josh Durkee). More information on this particular
project can be found here:

<http://www.wku.edu/watershed/popups/project_3.swf>

2) Impacts of Land Use and Land Cover on Near Surface Atmospheric
Hydrologic Cycle Components (Dr. Rezaul Mahmood). More information on
this particular project can be found here:

<http://www.wku.edu/watershed/popups/project_5.swf>

As part of Dr. Josh Durkee's research program, we are looking for one
student who, in addition to the summer research, is interested in
arriving early to participate in Dr. Durkee's "Field Methods in Severe
Weather Analysis and Forecasting" course. This course is worth six
credit hours, which involves eight days of in-class instruction and 14
days of traveling across the Great Plains, forecasting and verifying
severe convective storms. The overall goal of this class is to learn
about thunderstorm initiation processes and life-cycle morphology
(particularly in conducive severe weather environments), to sharpen
forecasting skills within a challenging setting, and to be at the
location of the thunderstorm events in order to verify each forecast. As
part of the REU Program, the course costs and associated fees will be
waived. Given the nature of the class, prerequisite coursework in
weather analysis and forecasting or synoptic and mesoscale meteorology,
or something similar is strongly preferred. You are expected to arrive
Sunday, May 13, 2012. For more information about scheduling and dates,
please see below. For additional questions about this component of the
REU Program, please contact Dr. Josh Durkee <joshua.durkee@wku.edu>

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The overall objective of this REU site is to provide undergraduates with
unique and exciting research opportunities in an area of environmental
research. The ultimate goal is to increase the student?s interest in
graduate study and/or careers in an environmentally related profession.

To ensure participating students understand the entire scientific
enterprise, from beginning to end, we will emphasize the process of
hypothesis development and testing. Relevant literature will be provided
to the students prior to coming to campus. During the execution of their
individual projects, students will receive hands-on experience of the
developing, testing, and modifying their hypothesis.

We strongly encourage first-generation college students from rural and
disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds in the Appalachia region to
apply. We are particularly seeking highly motivated students with
positive attitudes.
