Forwarded from CLIMLIST...

PhD Position (m/f)
code no. 2012/KS 4
The place of employment is Geesthacht, Germany.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near
Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. You can find more
information at <http://www.hzg.de>.

The Institute for Coastal Research in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, Germany,
invites applications for a 3-year PhD Position (m/f) for the project
CLISCODE (Climate Signals in Coastal Deposits).

This project, a collaboration between the Geological and Paleontological
Institute of the Hamburg University and the Institute for Coastal
Research of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is framed by the Helmholtz
Climate Initiative REKLIM (Regional climate change) -a consortium of
eight research centres within the Helmholtz Association.

REKLIM is using its unique combination of competence in regional
observations and process studies coupled with model simulations to
improve regional and global climate models, and provide a solid basis
for climate-related decision support. Moreover, global climate
simulations are used to determine the effects of climate variability and
change on the regional scale with improved modelling tools for
attribution and impact studies. For more information see
<http://www.reklim.de/en/home/>.

The interdisciplinary project CLISCODE aims to reconstruct long-term
changes of the regional wind climate at the south-western coast of the
Baltic Sea on timescales of decades to centuries with the general aim to
help understand the magnitude and mechanisms of long-term wind changes
and place the recent and projected climate changes in this region within
the perspective of the recent past.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht contribution to the project involves
the joint statistical analyses of existing global and regional climate
model simulations over the past millennia under different forcing
configurations together with observational datasets and proxy-based
climate reconstructions from coastal deposits (dune systems). The study
includes the identification of large-scale processes which are relevant
for the regional storm climate in the last centuries and its evaluation,
together with the responsible climate drivers from regional to local
scales, including the analyses of the influence of external and internal
variability.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht invites highly motivated candidates
with a basic knowledge of the field of climate sciences. The adequate
candidate has first demonstrated experiences in the application of
statistics to analyse and interpret long climatic data sets and a strong
interest in expanding his/her experience in this field. Interest in the
interpretation of climate proxies is welcome. She/he has good
organisation skills. Some experiences with Unix-based computers and
basis programming skills in modern FORTRAN and R will be positively
considered. The candidate is expected to have good written and oral
communication skills in English to publish his/her work in papers in
scientific journals and presenting materials at science workshops and
scientific conferences.

The candidate should be highly motivated to work in a team spread across
diverse geographic locations and from different partner institutions in
Germany and Poland. Due to the interdisciplinary of this project there
will be the optional opportunity to attend field works at the Polish
Baltic coast to learn more about methods to derive proxy data sets from
coastal sediments. Thus, basic language skills in German and Polish are
an advantage.

Contact person at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht: Dr Birgit H??nicke
(<birgit.huenicke@hzg.de>), (Department Long-term impacts on coastal
zones) and Dr. Eduardo Zorita (<eduardo.zorita@hzg.de>).

We offer an appropriate salary related to TV-AVH as well as the usual
public sector social benefits. The advancement of equality at the
Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht goes without saying; in particular, we are
striving to increase the percentage of women in the science sector.
Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered
preferentially within the framework of legal requirements.

Please send your application indicating job offer code no. 2012/KS 4 to
Max-Planck-Strasse 1, 21502 Geesthacht, Germany, or to the
e-mail-address: <personal@hzg.de>. Please include your CV, a statement
of interest and the names and addresses of three references. Closing
date for applications is April 12th, 2012.

catholique de Louvain (UCL, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium) is seeking for a
postdoctoral fellow.

Under the general guidance of Prof. Thierry Fichefet, who is one of the
Lead Authors of IPCC WG1 AR5 Chapter 12 (Long-term Climate Change:
Projections, Commitments and Irreversibility), this postdoctoral fellow
will contribute to :

* the analysis (with publication in peer-reviewed journals) of CMIP5
(http://cmip-pcmdi.llnl.gov/cmip5/) climate projections, with focus
on high-latitude climate and sea ice;
* the preparation of the second-order draft and final version of
Chapter 12 of IPCC WG1 AR5.

Applicants should have:

* a PhD degree in the field of global climate modeling;
* a training and ability to manipulate software tools for statistical
analyses and graphical representation of observational datasets and
climate model outputs;
* an excellent English level (both oral and written);
* a strong disposition to communicate with a group of peers.

The position will end on September 30, 2013, with possibility of renewal
afterwards. The grant (incl. full social security) will be commensurate
