*Faculty Position in Physical Oceanography in the Department of Geophysics,
University of Concepci?n, Chile.*
The Department of Geophysics of University of Concepcion invites
applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in Physical
Oceanography to be filled from the 1st of August, 2012. Preference will be
given to candidates working in observational oceanography although
candidates from other areas (e.g. theoretical, numerical) will also be
considered.
The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the Department's
high level of research activity, to develop and maintain national and
international links in association with projects in physical oceanography,
to teach courses at the undergraduate level and to supervise undergraduate,
masters and doctoral thesis students. The successful candidate will hold a
Ph.D. or equivalent in physical oceanography, physics or a related field
and will have carried out high quality research as evidenced by research
publications. Ideally, the candidate will conduct research in an area that
will compliment or extend the Department's areas of interest in physical
oceanography.
It is expected that the candidate will create, design and implant courses
associated with his/her area of expertise, aimed at students who already
have basic mathematical and geophysical training. We would like the
candidate to speak/learn Spanish; however it is possible to conduct courses
in either English or Spanish, depending on the level of comfort in the
language.
The review of the applications will begin on the 1st of May, 2012, and
continue until the position is filled. Part of the application process will
involve an interview in person (national) or in a video conference
(international) for the prospective candidate.
Applicants should send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a
statement of intent, two letters of reference and copies of their most
significant research to rencina@dgeo.udec.cl or to Departamento de
Geof?sica, Universidad de Concepcion, Casilla 160-C, Concepci?n, Chile.
Please direct any informal enquiries to Professor Rodrigo Abarca, (email:
roabarca@udec.cl).

The California Institute of Technology (CalTech) Postdoctoral Scholars Program
at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) invites applicants for a postdoctoral research
position in the remote sensing of clouds and other climate observables using a multi-
instrument combination of NASA and NOAA satellite platforms. The successful
applicants will join an active research team at JPL/CalTech that focuses on the use of
satellite observations to quantify multi-decadal cloud trends using the High Resolution
Infrared Radiation Sounder (HIRS) and Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS)
instruments, and other NASA A-train and NOAA sensors. The NASA and NOAA
sounder and imager data are combined at the footprint/pixel scale to provide continuity
between A-train and earlier NOAA sensors. This new data set will then be used to
quantify multi-decadal changes in global cloud types and distributions, which will be
useful as an observational constraint for climate models used in the IPCC assessments.
Familiarity with satellite radiances and geophysical retrieval products, and a strong
background in data analysis is required, while familiarity with atmospheric modeling
and/or model evaluation is desirable. Applicants must have a recent Ph.D. in the
atmospheric sciences or a closely related field. The appointments are contingent upon
completion of the Ph.D. The annual starting salary for a recent Ph.D. is approximately
$52,000 and can vary according to qualification. Postdoctoral scholars positions are
awarded initially for a one-year period. Appointments may be renewed in one-year
increments for a maximum of two additional years.
Applicants should submit (via e-mail) a curriculum vitae, a statement describing their
research experience and interests, and the names, addresses, and e-mail contacts of
three references to Brian Kahn (Brian.H.Kahn@jpl.nasa.gov<mailto:Brian.H.Kahn@jpl.nasa.gov> and
http://science.jpl.nasa.gov/people/BKahn/)
The California Institute of Technology and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory are Equal
Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employers. Women, minorities, veterans, and
disabled persons are encouraged to apply.
