A new Research Associate position is becoming available within the Research Cluster led by Professor Martin Wooster at King's College London (KCL), concentrating on the study of biomass burning using satellite Earth Observation, simulation modelling and in situ and remote sensing measurement techniques.

The Post is related to simulating vegetation fires and their observation by airborne or spaceborne infrared remote sensing - including their Fire Radiative Power (FRP). It aims to understand relations between this and parameters such as the intensity of the fire and the observation geometry. The work will include the use of a fire front propagation model, CFD modeling (eg FDS: fire.nist.gov/fds/), a radiative transfer model (DART), and experiments at small (seehttp://www.kcl.ac.uk/sspp/departments/geography/people/academic/wooster/20JGRcalibration.pdf) and larger scale (seehttp://www.atmos-chem-phys.net/11/11591/2011/acp-11-11591-2011.html).

There will be opportunities to collaborate with the team developing the DART model in CESBIO (France) and to contribute to a number of ongoing project in the KCL team (seehttp://wildfire.geog.kcl.ac.uk/ and publication examples at tinyurl.com/mwooster).

Applicants should have research experience in one or more of the following areas: fire spread modelling, CFD, radiative transfer modelling, deployment of in situ measurement devices during field campaigns.

An understanding of biomass burning processes and effects would be useful, and candidates are expected to be able to work with large datasets, to write computer code (ideally IDL and/or Python) and to be able to communicate clearly in English.

A contract for at least 12 months will be provided in the first instance.

Application deadline is 01/06/2012.
Please contact Pr Martin Wooster for more details atmartin.wooster@kcl.ac.uk

_Research project_

Like all economic sectors, air traffic contributes to CO_2 emissions and
climate change, but the magnitude of this contribution remains uncertain
and subject to scientific debate. Aircraft emit not only CO_2 but also
water vapour in the upper troposphere. Under favourable meteorological
conditions, water vapour emissions can induce the formation of
condensation trails (contrails) that can be seen in the sky. These
contrails may persist for several hours and can evolve to form cirrus
clouds. The climate impact on contrails and contrail-induced cirrus is
very uncertain.

This jobholder will parametrise the sub-grid scale variability in water
vapor in the upper troposphere and the formation of contrails and
contrail-induced cirrus in the LMDZ atmospheric general circulation
model. This modelling phase will be followed by a detailed validation
study using a unique observational dataset of contrails and
contrail-induced cirrus from the SIRTA experimental site. The
parametrisation for contrails and contrail-induced cirrus will then be
coupled to air traffic inventories to estimate the radiative and
climatic impacts of aviation.

This work is expected to contribute to the development and improvement
of physical parametrisations in the LMDZ model and should lead to
several high-level scientific publications.

_About the research project_

This post-doctoral position is funded by the Direction G?n?rale de
l'Aviation Civile (DGAC) under the IMPACT project. It involves five
partners: the Laboratoire Image Ville Environnement (LIVE), the
Laboratoire de M?t?orologie Dynamique (LMD), the Centre Europ?en de
Recherche et Formation Avanc?e en Calcul Scientifique (CERFACS),
M?t?o-France and the SNECMA company.
