The Integrated Ocean Wave project (IOWAGA) team at Ifremer is looking
for a researcher or engineer to perform a detailed testing and
re-tuning of model parameterizations based on a new implementation of
non-linear wave-wave interactions, and a general validation of the
IOWAGA wave model hindcasts and forecasts with remote sensing and in
situ data.
This work is jointly funded by the ERC and the U.S. NOPP program on
numerical wave model improvement. As a consequence, a strong interaction
with other groups is expected in the U.S., France, and elsewhere. A
solid knowledge on numerical wave modelling is expected. The work is
also closely linked to several initiatives for the estimation of air-sea
fluxes ( http://www.oceanflux-ghg.org/ ) and the interpretation of
remote sensing data.
Ifremer is already a world leader in numerical wave modelling,
especially in terms of physical parameterization. The work to be
performed is expected to lead to significant model improvements,
allowing new engineering and science applications. Scientific
publications should naturally come out of this effort.
The position is located in Brest, France, and the contract duration is
18 months. The position is open until filled, and work could start as
early as October 1st, 2012.

Research position in paleoclimate modeling at Uni Bjerknes Centre, Bergen, Norway
A 3-year research position in climate modelling is available at Uni Bjerknes Centre. Uni Bjerknes Centre is a department of Uni Research AS and partner of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR), a collaboration between Uni Research, University of Bergen, Institute of Marine Research and the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center.
The successful candidate will work on enhancing our understanding of natural climate variations on different time scales over the last 10,000 years (the so-called Holocene period). This will be done by integrating paleoclimatic time series and instrumental data with existing and planned simulations with state-of-the-art comprehensive climate models at BCCR. The successful candidate will focus on two key climate periods during the Holocene; that is the warm mid-Holocene about 6000 years ago and the last 2000 years (including the warm Medieval Period and the Little Ice Age). In particular the candidate will assess through data analysis and model-data comparison to what extent decadal to multidecadal variability in the Atlantic sector is controlled by processes intrinsic to the climate system, or if it is the result of external forcing factors such as solar variability, volcanism or anthropogenic emissions. The candidate will also be required to perform new GCM simulations in addition to analysing existing ones for instance from the Climate Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CIMP5). The modelling tool at BCCR will to a large extent be associated to the new Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM). The main scientific focus will be on large-scale atmospheric and oceanic dynamic processes involved in decadal- to multidecadal variability in the climate system during the above mentioned climate periods, including the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), the El Ni?o - Southern Oscillation and the Atlantic thermohaline circulation.
Applicants must have achieved a Norwegian doctorate in oceanography, meteorology, geosciences, biology, physics, mathematics (or other relevant natural sciences) or equivalent education abroad, or have presented the dissertation for assessment by the closing date for applications. It is a prerequisite that the dissertation has been approved before appointment is granted.
Candidates must have experience with- and good knowledge of global climate models. It is also required that the successful candidate has experience in large-scale atmospheric dynamics and climate analysis, particularly with gridded datasets. It will also be great advantage if the successful candidate has some programming experience. The candidate will work in a lively research environment and should have good team working skills.
