The School of Earth and Environment seeks to appoint four Academic
Research Fellows to strengthen its world-leading research profile across
the Earth and Environmental Sciences. An Academic Research Fellowship
provides the opportunity for a researcher with outstanding potential to
establish an independent academic career. These posts are available for a
period of five years with the expectation of progressing to an established
academic post subject to meeting probationary targets.
One or more of the fellowships may be held within the Institute for
Climate and Atmospheric Science (ICAS), which is one of the 4 research
institutes in the School of Earth and Environment. ICAS is an
internationally excellent centre, of around 120 scientists, conducting
research into climate and weather phenomena in the areas of Atmospheric
Dynamics and Clouds; Atmospheric Chemistry and Aerosols; and Climate
Change and Impacts. We study globally important climate processes by
linking our field measurements, laboratory analyses and models from the
scale of local weather phenomena to the global scale. Our research
benefits from our long-standing integration with, and leadership of the UK
National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS;
http://www.ncas.ac.uk/index.php/en/). The University of Leeds has a formal
Academic Partnership with the Met Office (see
http://www.see.leeds.ac.uk/research/icas/working-groups/met-office-partnership/),
which involves staff exchanges, joint projects and shared students.
The details of these posts are outlined on-line at

The deadline for these posts will be 12 October 2012 (extended from the
original web listing).
Informal enquiries regarding Atmospheric Science-related applications for
these fellowships may be made to Doug Parker (d.j.parker@leeds.ac.uk) or
Steve Dobbie (j.s.e.dobbie@leeds.ac.uk), or to the contacts provided on

Two Post-Doctoral Positions for MJO Modeling Research/University of Miami
The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) at the University of Miami invites applications for two post-doctoral positions in the Division of Meteorology and Physical Oceanography. We are seeking highly motivated postdoctoral research associates with strong backgrounds in numerical modeling and physics of tropical convective systems. Successful candidates are expected to join a research team consisting of scientists from mulitple institutes to conduct research using field observations to evaluate and improve simulations of cloud systems related to the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) by cloud-permitting models of global, regional and local domains. One postdoctoral associate will be located at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and work closely with NCAR scientists on modeling using the MPAS (Model for Prediction Across Scales). Another will work closely with scientists from University of Miami, Harvard, and NASA Goddard on modeling using cloud-permitting GEOS-5 and SAM. Both are expected to participate in model-observation comparisons and model improvement. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter stating research interest, curriculum vitae, and a list of names and addresses (including email addresses) of three professional references. Applications will be reviewed as received and the positions kept open until filled. The starting date of the position is expected to be in fall 2012 but is negotiable. The appointment will be initially one year, renewable up to three years. Salary will commensurate with experience. Applications or requests for more information should be directed to: Prof. Chidong Zhang, Division of Meteorology and Physical Oceanography, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami, 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway, Miami, FL 33149-1098 (Tel 305-421-4042, Fax 305-421-4696, Email czhang@rsmas.miami.edu).
University of Miami is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
