Dear colleagues,
on behalf of Prof. Dr. Andreas Macke I am glad to forward you the following announcement for a scientist position at the Leibniz-Institute for Tropospheric Research in Leipzig, Germany. Thank you for your kind attention.
With best regards,

Leibniz-Institut for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS)
3 year scientist position in cloud radiation budget observations and modeling
The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) is an internationally renowned institute in the field of aerosol and cloud research.
Its satellite remote sensing work group is offering a 3 year position for a PostDoc (based on tarif TV-L E13, full time) as a contribution to the
BMBF-fundedproject ?High Definition Clouds and Precipitation for Climate Prediction, HD-(CP)??.
The successful candidate will operate a set of ground-based pyranometers to obtain the cloud-induced spatial and temporal variability of downwelling solar radiation.
Data from synchronizedradar, microwave radiometer and sky imager measurements shall be converted to time-series of three-dimensional cloud properties,
which in turn shall be utilized in existing 3d Monte-Carlo radiative transfer models to close the radiative flux measurements.
Data from high resolution cloud models will bemade available for further cloud-radiation closure studies. Cloud and radiation data will be measured during an intensive
field campaign in spring 2013. The position requires active participation in preparation and performance of the field campaign including set-up and maintenance of the pyranometer set.
The work will be carried out in cooperation with observational and modelling partnerinstitutions throughout Germany, and provides an excellent opportunity to work at the boundary
between in-situ-measurements, ground-based remote sensing, and atmospheric modelling.
An excellent candidate with a PhD degree in Meteorology, (Atmospheric) Physics or Mathematics is sought.
Fluency in English and the ability to clearly present research results both in spoken and written form are essential.
Experimental and programming skills (preferably Fortran) are highly desirable.
Interested candidates should send a complete application, including CV, cover letter, certificates and contact information for one reference via mail or as a single PDF document by e-mail.
Review of applications will begin October 15, 2012, and continue until the position is filled. Employment should start no later than Jan 1st, 2013.
Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, preference will be given to a disabled person.
TROPOS is committed to increase the fraction of female scientists and particularly encourages qualified female applicants to apply.

Linux system administrator 50% - Postdoc / scientist 50% (optional) at the University of Bern, Switzerland
The Climatology group and the Climate Impacts group at the Geography Institute of the University of Bern are looking for a linux system administrator (50% position). The option exists to expand the 50% system administration position by a 50% postdoctoral or scientific research position to a full position.
Linux administration 50%:
You will be responsible for the administration and support of the Linux/ Unix based IT infrastructure of the two research groups. This entails approximately 20 clients, "large-scale" storage and several servers. We are looking for someone with experience in administrating a linux based IT infrastructure and who enjoys working in a scientific environment.
Postdoc position 50% (optional):
The successful candidate will work in the field of climate risks / climate impacts and atmospheric dynamics with Olivia Martius. Detailed research questions can be developed depending on the background of the applicant. A flair for statistics or regional modeling or the handling large data sets is an asset.
You can apply either for the 50% system administration position or for the 50% IT+ 50% post doc position.
To apply please send electronically a brief curriculum vitae, a brief statement of relevant experience and potential research interests (if applicable), reprints of pertinent recent publications (if applicable) and the names and email addresses of two referees to olivia.martius@giub.unibe.ch<mailto:olivia.martius@giub.unibe.ch>.
The position is available immediately but the starting date is negotiable up to Spring 2013. Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled but preference is given to applications received before end of September 2012.
We enthusiastically invite applications from qualified women

We currently have 2 PDRA positions available as part of the NERC
Atmospheric Chemistry In The Earth System (ACITES) research network.
Please note that the closing date for applications is the end of
this week, and interested candidates are therefore requested to
apply now.
ACITES Research Associate in Atmospheric Transport (Edinburgh)
http://www.jobs.ed.ac.uk/vacancies/index.cfm?fuseaction=vacancies.detail&vacancy_ref=3015983
ACITES Research Associate in Atmospheric Deposition (Lancaster)
http://hr-jobs.lancs.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx?ref=A474
The NERC atmospheric chemistry research network ACITES is looking for
two ambitious postdoctoral research associates interested in improving
the representation of atmospheric chemistry in Earth System Models.
These two-year PDRA positions will contribute to the network by
developing and applying new metrics to quantify how well key processes
important to atmospheric chemistry are represented in Earth System models.
One position, based at the University of Edinburgh, will focus on
application of metrics that test key tracer transport processes in
models, e.g., boundary layer mixing, convection, long-range transport
and stratosphere-troposphere exchange, and comparison with observations.
A second position, based at Lancaster University, will focus on the
evaluation and improvement of treatments of the dry deposition of trace
gases and aerosol from the atmosphere to the biosphere/Earth's surface,
and on the development and application of metrics that will allow robust
evaluation of these schemes against observations across a range of scales.
Both transport and deposition metrics will be applied across a range of
models in use in the UK community, and will also contribute tointernational
intercomparison exercises such as HTAP (HemisphericTransport of Air
Pollution, www.htap.org) and ACCMIP (AtmosphericChemistry and Climate Model
Intercomparison Project,www.giss.nasa.gov/projects/accmip).
Candidates should have (or be about to complete) a Ph.D. in a related
quantitative field (e.g., atmospheric chemistry modelling or Earth
system science). Further details are available for the individual posts
at the links above. Suitably qualified candidates may apply for both
positions as recruitment for these network will be fully coordinated.
These are fixed-term posts for 24 months starting on a mutually agreeddate as
soon as possible after 1st October. The closing date for bothpositions is
Friday 28th September 2012.
