We are inviting applications for a fully-funded MASc or PhD studentship to carry out modelling and/or data assimilation to improve our understanding of circulation in the Labrador Sea. The start date of the studentship will be January 1, 2014 (may be later for MASc). This exciting project is part of a larger research network that involves several universities and government agencies in Canada. The research network will answer fundamental questions about how the deep ocean exchanges carbon dioxide, oxygen, and heat with the atmosphere. New observations and modelling will explore what controls these exchanges and how they interact with varying climate, in order to resolve the role of deep convection regions in the Carbon Cycle and Earth System.
Interested applicants should send a cover letter, their CV, and copies of academic transcripts to ka3scott@uwaterloo.ca. Students should have a very keen interest in data assimilation and/or oceanography, and a previous degree in either engineering, applied mathematics, oceanography or meteorology. Programming experience using C or Fortran and knowledge of fluid dynamics, are significant assets. International applicants require a valid TOEFL or IETLS score at the time of the application.
Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled. For students wishing to begin in January 2014, the deadline for applications is August 12th 2013.
Questions regarding the project can be directed to ka3scott@uwaterloo.ca.
