Research Fellow in the ozone-layer-climate interactions
Starting salary ?27,854 a year, in a range up to ?36,298 a year, with potential progression to ?38,522 a year.
Applicants are sought for a Research Fellow (Grade 7) position to work on a collaborative project entitled "Co-ordinated Airborne Studies in the Tropics (CAST)", which is led by the University of Cambridge and includes the University of Birmingham and 5 other UK research institutes. Funding has been awarded by the Natural Environment Research Council for a study involving coordinated deployment of the UK Research Aircraft and the NASA Global Hawk unmanned aerial system. The project also includes development of models of the transport of water vapour through the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) and the subsequent ozone-layer-climate interactions. The successful candidate will work with Professor Rob MacKenzie to implement this modelling component of the study. This research is part of a wider programme of work at the University of Birmingham studying fundamental physical and chemical processes in atmospheric chemistry and meteorology.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in atmospheric science or a strongly numerate physical science, together with experience of process-based computer modelling. Quantitative skills are required for the modelling work and, given the collaborative nature of the project, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required as well as the ability to meet deadlines, prepare publications and work effectively with other members of the team. The successful applicant will contribute to the research profile of the team through the dissemination of research findings at major conferences and through publications. This is a fixed-term position commencing on 1st October 2013 or as soon thereafter as possible thereafter. The exact duration of the post will depend on the initial salary and career progression.
