Postdoctoral Position at JPL/Caltech in Cloud-Radiation-Dynamicas Interactions
The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) Postdoctoral Scholars Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) invites applicants for a postdoctoral research positions in the study of cloud-radiation-dynamical interactions. A major emphasis of the research involves the application of satellite observations (e.g. CloudSat/Calipso, TRMM, AIRS) to better characterize and understand these interactions and improve their representation in global models. The latter includes the CMIP5 model archive and the multi-model physical processes experiment organized by the WGNE MJO Task Force and the GEWEX GASS activities (see yotc.ucar.edu<http://yotc.ucar.edu/>). A specific focus will be on the representation, and systematic biases, of cloud and precipitation hydrometeors and their impacts on radiation, and in turn dynamics, in global models.
Applicants must have a recent Ph.D. in atmospheric science or a closely related field, must be familiar with atmospheric modeling and parameterization issues and must have a strong background in data analysis. Experience with one or more state-of-the-art global atmospheric/climate models, the framework for simulation and model intercomparison studies, and/or one or more of the above types of satellite data is desired.
Postdoctoral scholar positions are contingent upon evidence of completion of the Ph.D. The positions are awarded initially for a one-year period and may be renewed in one-year increments for a maximum of two additional years. The annual starting salary for a recent Ph.D. is approximately $52,000 and can vary somewhat according to the applicant?s qualifications.
To apply, please send a letter describing your research interests and enclose your CV and the names of three references, by mail to Duane Waliser, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, MS 183-501, 4800 Oak Grove Drive, Pasadena, CA 91109-8099, or by email to duane.waliser@jpl.nasa.gov<mailto:duane.waliser@jpl.nasa.gov>.
Caltech and JPL are equal opportunity/affirmative action employers. Women, minorities, veterans, and disabled persons are encouraged to apply. This position is open to US or foreign nationals.

The Division of Climate and Environmental Physics, Physics Institute,
University of Bern, opens a position for a
PhD student in Earth System Modeling of the Past
In the framework of the groups of Climate and Environmental Physics and
the Oeschger Center for Climate Change Research the candidate will
explore the climate variability of the past millennium and future with
particular focus on extreme events. One key question is whether and how
extreme events of key variables of the climate system changed in the
past and will change in the future. Further, the candidate will
investigate the underlying mechanisms being responsible for such
changes. As a starting point basic indicators such as frost days, summer
days, tropical nights, heavy precipitation day, and consecutive dry
days, but also dynamical features such as cyclones their characteristics
and atmospheric blocking. Therefore, the Community Earth System Model
(CESM) provided by Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) will be used
to perform scenario and sensitivity simulations.
Tasks:
* Perform CESM experiments for the future with different emission
scenarios.
* Perform sensitivity experiments with CESM.
* Analysis of the atmospheric circulation, blocking, eddies, and
weather statistics.
* Apply extreme value statistics to model and analyze output.
Requirements:
* Diploma or Master degree in physics, meteorology, or environmental
sciences.
* Computer skills in some or all of FORTRAN, MATLAB, R/S-Plus, NCL,
and shell-programming on Unix or Linux platforms.
* Experience with large data sets and climate modeling.
* Fluency in English (written and spoken).
* Strong motivation and ability to carry out research in an
interdisciplinary environment.
* Strong reporting skills.
* Knowledge in CESM or another Atmosphere Ocean General Circulation
model and extreme value statistics is an advantage.
Project start and place:
* Climate and Environmental Physics, Physics Institute, University
of Bern, Switzerland.
* The project will start on 1st September 2013 or by agreement.
Employment:
The position will be funded for three years. The employment and salary
is subject to the conditions of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
Application:
The application documents contain your Curriculum Vitae, copies of your
Diploma/Master marks/certificate and thesis, as well as a statement of
interest (1 page). Please attach two names of referees (including their
addresses and emails). The closing date of the application is 15. August
2013.
