Postdoctoral Research Officer - Atmospheric Dynamics
Centre for Space, Atmospheric & Oceanic Science
University of Bath, UK
Salary: Starting from ?30,424, rising to ?36,298
Closing Date: October 14, 2013

SG-WEX: THE SOUTH GEORGIA WAVE EXPERIMENT

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Officer position
in the atmospheric dynamics group of Professor Nicholas Mitchell based
in the Centre for Space, Atmospheric & Oceanic Science at the
University of Bath, UK. The post is funded by the Natural Environment
Research Council (NERC). It is a fixed-term three-year contract and is
available from November 1, 2013.

The research will investigate the role of the isolated island of South
Georgia in the South Atlantic as an intense source of gravity waves as
part of the ?SG-WEX: South Georgia Wave Experiment? project. It will
study how these gravity waves propagate from the troposphere into the
stratosphere and mesosphere. Data from radiosondes, from satellite
radio-occultation measurements (COSMIC) and from a VHF meteor radar
will be used to determine wave fluxes and their variability. The
Research Officer will join a fieldwork team from Bath and The British
Antarctic Survey to deploy the VHF meteor radar on South Georgia and
will carry out two radiosondes campaigns from the island.

Applicants should hold, or expect to shortly receive, a PhD in
physics, meteorology, engineering or mathematics. Experience of
atmospheric dynamics would be an advantage. Research skills in data
analysis are essential. The work of the Centre is strongly
international and the Research Officer will be expected to take part
in international collaborations and to present their work at
international meetings.

Further details, including how to apply, can be found here:

Dear colleagues,

I have a position vacant for a PostDoc in the meteorology group at the Geophysical Institute at the University of Bergen.

I would greatly appreciate if you could share this information widely with potential candidates.

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow interested in studying Arctic polar lows within the research project ?High Impact Weather in the Arctic? (HIMWARC). HIMWARC aims to extend our fundamental knowledge and concomitantly restrain present levels of uncertainty with respect to future changes of high impact weather in the Arctic. The postdoctoral position is a fixed-term post, the chief objective being to qualify the selected candidate for work in senior positions in their disciplines. The term of employment for this position is 2.5 years.

The scientific focus for the position will be on the formation, frequency and occurrence of Arctic meso-scale cyclones, often referred to as polar lows. HIMWARC seeks to gain further understanding of the dynamical processes involved in the genesis of these phenomena and aims to extend and unify existing theories. The dynamical findings are used to define and revise detection routines for polar lows. Based on these novel detection routines climatologies of present and future polar low distribution and frequency will be established, utilizing reanalysis and high-resolution climate projection data, respectively.

Please see the following link for more details and application procedure:

Best regards,
Thomas

Research Associate

We are seeking a project scientist to work within the Leicester contribution to the CEC PEGASOS project. PEGASOS will undertake a series of studies aimed at quantifying chemistry-climate feedbacks. The job will consist of a combination of atmospheric process measurements using radical measurement instrumentation in the Po Valley in Italy. Laboratory experiments focussed on investigating the role of secondary organic aerosol in chemistry-climate feedbacks will be undertaken.

The research scientist will also support and co-ordinate knowledge integration and transfer activities for the PEGASOS consortium, particularly in respect of the science policy interface of chemistry and climate interactions. You will work on atmospheric process measurements and knowledge transfer and integration with respect to policy.

A 2.5-year research fellowship to study air-sea interaction under high
wind conditions is available within my group at the University of Leeds.
This post is associated with the High Wind Gas Exchange Study, a
collaborative project between multiple US and UK institutions to study
the enhancement of air-sea gas exchange resulting from wave breaking and
bubble mediated processes under high winds.

Two post doctoral research fellowships are available at the University
of Leeds to study Arctic boundary layer and cloud processes and their
interaction with surface ocean/sea-ice conditions. Both positions are
available for 2-years in the first instance.

These post are associated with a joint project between the University of
Leeds, Stockholm Univeristy, and the Cooperative Institute for Research
in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado/NOAA. A
3-month research cruise around the marginal ice zone of the Arctic Ocean
will collect a wide range of in situ and active remote sensing
measurements (lidar, cloud radar, etc) of boundary layer and cloud
properties. The dynamic interactions between boundary layer structure,
cloud properties, and surface ocean/ice conditions will be investigated.

Job descriptions attached.
