within the IGAS project at Universit? Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France

*Post-doctoral position in tropospheric chemistry within the IGAS
project at Universit? Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France*

*Title*: validation of IASI data and characterization of the Asian UT
composition with IAGOS

*Duration*: 12 to 18 months starting as soon as possible and before
November 2013

*Salary*: The successful applicant will be funded by the European/FP7
project IGAS (IAGOS for GMES Atmospheric Service, _www.igas-project.org
<http://www.igas-project.org/>_) and employed by Universit? Paul
Sabatier (UPS), with a gross monthly salary of 2200 to 2600 Euros
depending on experience (include unemployment, retirement and basic
social security).*

Background*:
The IGAS project deals with the use of IAGOS (_http://www.iagos.org
<http://www.iagos.org/>_)airborne observations in the framework of
GMES/Copernicus applications and services. IAGOS O3 and CO observations
taken at take-off and landing are ideal for the validation of satellite
data. The first and second Metop/IASI satellite sensors have been
launched in 2006 and 2012. IASI enables the retrieval of the
tropospheric and UTLS content of atmospheric pollutants such as O3 and
CO. The Laboratoire d'A?rologie from UPS (_http://www.aero.obs-mip.fr
<http://www.aero.obs-mip.fr/>_) is involved in both the retrieval and
validation of IASI chemistry data. Furthermore, the latest IAGOS data
provide a unique dataset to understand the transport and chemical
processes driving the composition of the upper troposphere over Asia.
*
Work description*:
The first task will be to set up the tools enabling the validation of
IASI chemistry retrievals with IAGOS data. The work will consist in
developing tools to (i) complete the partially observed IAGOS profiles
and calculate partial and total columns by extending them with selected
external information, such as stratospheric satellite observations,
climatology or model outputs (ii) retrieve satellite data collocated
with the airborne data (iii) convolve the complete profiles with the
averaging kernels from IASI. The validation will then be performed
including the latest IAGOS data.
The second objective of this post-doc will be to use the latest IAGOS
data to better characterize the impact of Asian pollution uplift during
the monsoon on the UT composition. Satellite observations have shown
that during boreal summer, the uplifted pollutants are trapped within
the Asian Monsoon Anticyclone. Recent O3 and CO data collected from
Asia-Europe and Asia-Middle East IAGOS flights will be unique to
accurately determine the chemical edge of the Asian Monsoon Anticyclone
and to help quantify the O3 budget in the Anticyclone. IAGOS data may be
complemented with satellite data (IASI), lagrangian (FLEXPART) and
chemistry transport (GEOS-Chem) modelisation tools.

The successful candidate will work within the "Ozone and precursors"
team of Laboratoire d'A?rologie. The candidate will be responsible for
his WP deliverables and will participate to the IGAS meetings and
collaborate with the colleagues involved in this WP (KNMI, MPI-Jena).
Good skills in computer programming (Fortran, IDL/NCL/Matlab and
possibly Python) are required. A recent Ph.D. graduate with knowledge in
atmospheric sciences, and/or remote sensing is desirable. Correct
English (spoken and written) is required and French speaking would be
positive. *

Applications including*:
- a cover letter
- a complete CV
- the names (plus full address and e-mail) of two referees
- eventually recommendation letters
should be sent preferably by e-mail to Brice Barret
(*brice.barret@aero.obs-mip.fr)*.
