Statistical Methodology to Downscale Climate Projections - Post-Doc
Required Level
Ph.D. Thesis (Scientific)
Starting Date
01/01/2014 (flexible)
Duration
1 year renewable, maximum duration of 2 years
Context
This Post-Doc is in the context of an FP7 European project on seasonal to decadal climate prediction, SPECS http://www.specs-fp7.eu/ . One of the objectives is to adapt and calibrate statistical methodologies for seasonal-to-decadal (s2d) downscaling, including a thorough assessment of the resulting forecast quality and the development and documentation of a public, stand-alone R package; the added value of dynamical downscaling methods for seasonal predictions will be validated in two experiments over Europe and South America. It is thus planned to inter-compare several statistical downscaling methodologies over Europe.
Description
The work will focus on extending an existing statistical downscaling methodology for climate change projections, developed at CERFACS and called dsclim http://www.cerfacs.fr/~page/dsclim/ and http://www.cerfacs.fr/~page/dsclim/dsclim_doc-latest.pdf, to be applicable over Europe. This methodology is based on weather types and the physical links between the large scale atmospheric circulation and the local scale climate variables. It has been used successfully over France for several years, and a diagnostic tool package has been recently developed to enable in-depth analysis of its output. This european extension will require the modification of the method to enable it to be used in this new context, and thus necessitate important scientific work. It will be necessary to perform extensive data analysis using existing or to-be-developed statistical tools. It is foreseen that this work will lead to a scientific paper as well as the participation in at least one international scientific conference.
This job will take place at CERFACS, within a multidisciplinary team. The candidate must have an excellent ability to work in team, especially because of the european project context. The candidate should also be rigorous and have a very good level in english. It is considered an advantage to have a good level in the following technical abilities, in decreasing order of importance: scientific programming, unix, shell programming, NCAR NCL, NetCDF, C/C++, Fortran90.
CERFACS is located in "m?t?opole" in Toulouse, with several services such as a restaurant, sports equipment, and an association that provides several sports and social activities. It is easily reached by car and by public transport.

M?thodologie statistique de r?gionalisation de projections climatiques - Post-Doc
Niveau requis
Th?se (Ph.D.) scientifique
Date de d?but
01/01/2014 (flexible)
Dur?e
1 an renouvelable, dur?e maximale de 2 ans
Contexte
