Two Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) positions (PhD students) ? FP7 Initial Training Network (ITN) on Annually Resolved Archives of Marine Climate Change (ARAMACC)
Uni Climate is a department of Uni Research AS (http://www.uni.no) and partner of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR), a collaboration between Uni Research, University of Bergen, Institute of Marine Research and the Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center.
Uni Climate is offering two PhD studentships for candidates interested in the use of bivalve shells to study the history of the marine climate of the north Atlantic region. The projects will be implemented within the framework of the ARAMACC (Annually Resolved Archives of Marine Climate Change) Marie Curie Initial Training Network, whose overall goal is to train researchers in multiple skills across the broad supra-disciplinary field of molluscan sclerochronology and scleroclimatology.
Description
ARAMACC is a collaboration between nine internationally-recognized research teams (in UK, Germany, Norway, Croatia, France, Netherlands and Portugal) and two industrial partners (in UK and Norway), each with complementary expertise in a wide range of marine sciences.
We are seeking two highly motivated early stage researchers (ESRs) to take part in a suite of PhD projects that will focus on northeastern Atlantic marine climate variability and paleoceanography. The successful candidates will build crossdated chronologies (similar to tree-ring chronologies) using annual increments embedded in the shells of long-lived marine bivalve molluscs with the aim of building up a network of such chronologies for the northeast Atlantic region. The studies will also involve the geochemical (stable isotope) analysis of selected shells from climatically sensitive periods. The chronologies will then be compared with instrumental measurements and other proxy archives in order to build up a detailed picture of the history of marine change in the region over the past several hundred years. ERS1 will be working on bivalve specimens from the shelf around the Faroe Islands, and ERS2 will work on bivalve shells from the shelf off northern Norway.
As part of the ARAMACC training programme, the ESRs will participate with eight other ARAMACC ESRs from across Europe in a research cruise, three summer schools and two workshops delivered by ARAMACC partners and designed to train the ESRs in a wide range of generic and specific skills. The candidates will also be invited to participate in the national research school in climate - resclim.no.
The ESRs will develop multidisciplinary research skills involving:
- field collection of bivalves and shells for use in chronology construction
- preparation and analysis of acetate peels of bivalve shells
- chronology construction using annual increments embedded in the shells
- geochemical analysis of selected shells from climatically sensitive periods
- statistical analysis of sclerochronological data, including comparisons with climate measurements
Uni Research is looking for candidates with:
- A masters? degree or equivalent in any branch of marine or environmental science
- High level of spoken and written English and good communication skills
- Positive attitude toward field and laboratory work
- Ability to organize and prioritize their own research within the project schedule
- Positive approach to working in a team
- Computer literacy and good numerical, statistical and analytical skills
- Previous international experience and a positive approach to multinational working
Salary is decided by agreement. Uni Research AS has employee pension and insurance agreement. The successful candidate will also receive a mobility allowance.
For further information about the positions please contact researcher Carin Andersson Dahl, e-mail: carin.andersson@uni.no, phone: +47 55583216. For more information about Uni Research and BCCR, please refer to http://uni.no and http://www.bjerknes.uib.no.
The successful applicant must comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at any time. The applicants must have achieved a master?s degree or equivalent or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is a prerequisite that the formal admission requirements of the PhD programme are met before an appointment can be made.
Marie-Curie fellowship Mobility requirement:
At the time of recruitment by ARAMACC, ESRs must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work or studies) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. ESRs can be of any nationality.
Career stage: Early stage researcher 0-4 yrs (Post graduate)
Number of positions available: 2
