*Job Vacancy - West Antarctic Climate Modeller*
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment
Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of
scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential
regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.
Based within the Climate Programme at our Cambridge office, you will be
part of a small team investigating how the climate of West Antarctica
will change over the coming century using state of the art climate
models. West Antarctica has experienced some of the largest climatic
changes on Earth over recent years, including a marked surface warming
and an increase in storm activity over the Southern Ocean. This study
will investigate the mechanisms behind recent changes using a high
resolution (10 km) regional atmosphere-only model. The model will then
be run for selected periods over the next century with various
greenhouse gas emission scenarios and with the expected recovery of the
ozone hole.
*Qualifications:* PhD or equivalent postgrad experience. First degree in
numerate subject/physical science
*Duration:* 3.5 Year Fixed Term Appointment
*Salary:* Salary will be in the range of ?26,450 to ?29,710 per annum.

POSTDOC vacancy (Temporary position)
Date 11 october 2013
Number KNMI 2013/10
At the Global Climate Division of the KNMI in De Bilt, the Netherlands,
there is a temporary position for:
Postdoc
General information
Climate research at KNMI is aimed at observing, understanding and
predicting changes in the climate system. Within the Global Climate
division, large-scale climate variability is studied, including the
effects of climate change. The research activities in the group focus on
quantifying decadal to centennial climate variability, studying
feedbacks in the earth system, development of global climate
scenarios and development of monthly, seasonal and decadal predictions.
The group is internationally recognized in the fields of climate
extremes, regional sea level changes, atmospheric dynamics and land
processes.
Job information
As part of the Netherlands Polar Programme, the Netherlands Organisation
for Scientific Research (NWO) finance the research project ?Validating
recently- developed twenty-first century regional sea level projections
using satellite observations?. A recently developed unique series of
patterns for twenty-first century regional sea level change display
several characteristic common features. However, significant
uncertainties in the patterns? amplitude remain, mainly due to
uncertainties in the ice sheet contributions. Here we aim to assess the
quality and merits of these regional projections by a detailed analysis
of satellite observations, arguing that that twenty-year record must
have captured ~10-30% of the projected twenty-first century rise.
Notably, the observed regional trends in sea level do not resemble the
projections, as trends induced by global warming are masked by natural
climate. Within this project, the long-term regional sea level change
will be extracted from the altimetry record by filtering out the
dominant modes of natural variability using observations and model
reanalyses. The resulting filtered signal, which expectedly contains the
sought-after forced regional trends, is then compared to the developed
sea level projections. Moreover, taking advantage of our detailed
knowledge of the sea level patterns associated with the individual
contributions
(ocean expansion, glacier melt, Greenland and Antarctic ice sheet mass
losses, and groundwater extraction) we analyze which scenario is most
likely to be ongoing. The outcomes will benefit policy makers involved
in coastal management worldwide.
The postdoctoral researcher will work at the Global Climate Division,
under supervision of dr. C.A. Katsman.
Required
For this position, a PhD degree in physical oceanography, remote sensing
or related subject is required. Experience with numerical modeling
and/or handling of large data sets is preferred. The candidate is fluent
in written and spoken English, and capable of presenting the results of
the project at international conferences and in peer-reviewed
international journals. Preferably, she/he already has published several
scientific papers.
Working place: De Bilt
Salary: Max ? 4.380,72 gross per month (schaal 11)
Details
The appointment is temporary for a period of three years. More

Subject PhD position Arctic Climate (Temporary position)
Date 11 October 2013
Number KNMI 2013/12
At the Global Climate Division of KNMI, in De Bilt, The Netherlands,
there is a temporary position for:
PhD student in Arctic climate research
General information
KNMI is the national Dutch knowledge center for climate and climate
change. An important KNMI task is therefore to assess and interpret
climate changes and to make scenarios of local and regional climate
change to support adaptation policies and measures. For this we
cooperate with established researchers, both nationally and
internationally. In doing climate research and for making the climate
scenarios we employ numerical models of the large-scale circulation in
the atmosphere and ocean coupled to sea ice and land modules.
Additionally, we make use of observations of the climate system
Job information
An important question is to what extent near-future climate changes in
the Arctic regions will impact the West-European and Dutch climate,
including extremes (for example cold winters), and what will be the
governing mechanisms. Within this project we will use high-resolution
global climate models, including the in-house model EC-Earth, to
investigate these influences in detail. Moreover, the projected warming
of the Arctic and the associated reduction in sea ice will have
consequences for Dutch socio-economic activities in the Arctic (oil/gas
exploitation, fishery, shipping/transport, tourism), and will thereby
impact relevant policies. Within this project we will address the
climatological boundary conditions related to the relevant policy areas
using the aforementioned climate models, including the associated
uncertainties. The PhD student will work in the department Global
Climate of the KNMI under the supervision of dr. R. Bintanja. The
research will lead to a doctoral degree (PhD) at Wageningen University.
Required
We seek an innovative, result-oriented candidate with good
multidisciplinary skills
who is able to work in a team, and with the following qualifications:
? MSc in meteorology or a related study area
? Excellent analytical skills, knowledge of physical climate mechanisms
en of
statistical methods in weather and climate research
? Experience in (large) numerical modeling
?Experience in programming (e.g. Fo rtran), Linux, and visualization and
analyses software is desirable
? Affinity with climate and climate change research
? Fluent in English (verbally and in writing)
Location: De Bilt
Salary: Start at max. ? 1.934,18 gross per month

The Institute for Meteorology of the University of Leipzig has a vacancy
for a
1 PhD position (m/f)
within the ERC-funded "Quantification of Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Effects
by Regime (QUAERERE)" project, aiming at a quantification of the
radiative forcing by aerosol indirect effects from satellite data and
regional and global climate models.
The PhD project would statistically analyse a new satellite dataset for
ice cloud properties in combination with aerosol-reanalysis data, as
well as sensitivity studies with regional and global climate models to
examine possible effects of anthropogenic aerosols on ice clouds.
Requirements
- A degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences or related field
- Programming skills (Linux shell scripts, Fortran, data processing and
visualisation tools such as NCAR command language)
- Good knowledge of the English language (German skills are welcomed)
- Some prior experience with cloud-, aerosol- and/or radiation physics
and experience in analysis of remote sensing data and/or experience with
climate modelling
The position is offered for up to three years. A good start date could
be 1 January 2014, but this is flexible. Payment is 75% of a civil
service position (TVL E13).
Applications include a detailed CV and the names and e-mail addresses of
two references.
For further information please contact Prof. Johannes Quaas at phone +49
