The Climate Change Program at CATIE, based in Costa Rica, offers an
opportunity to collaborate with two research projects on modeling
climate impacts on Central American ecosystems and their services. The
researcher will be working with several teams at CATIE on two specific
topics: (i) assessing climate/weather determinants of the coffee rust
outbreak in 2012 and, (ii) modeling impacts of climate change in Central
America using dynamic vegetation models. We are looking for a MSc. or
PhD level researcher with modeling experience and proficiency in
scripting/programming (i.e. Python, Fortran, Matlab) to analyze large
datasets within Linux environments. Activities are to be conducted in
Turrialba-Costa Rica (CATIE?s headquarters) over a one year period,
starting immediately. Further involvement with the Climate Change

Within the LOEWE -priority and excellence program "FACE2FACE
-consequences of climate change, adaptation to climate change and reduce
greenhouse gas emissions by 2050", funded by the Hessian Ministry for
Science and Art and carried out at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen,
the University of Geisenheim, the Max-Planck-Institute for terrestrial
Microbiology Marburg and at the Philipps-University of Marburg
is seeking a 3 year Postdoc position starting in January 2014
The FACE2FACE priority program investigates the consequences of
increased atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations on agricultural
ecosystems including mitigation options for the reduction of greenhouse
gas emissions. Two FACE systems (Free Air Carbon Dioxide Enrichment) are
available to investigate both short and long term effects of increased
atmospheric CO2 concentration (expected conditions around the year 2050)
on grassland, grapes and vegetables
Duties*:*
-Development and Application of mathematical and statistical methods to
detect patterns and structures in ecological data, study and analyse
connections between GHG-Emissions and biotic and abiotic factors through
applications of new statistical causality methods
- Design and further development of the Data Warehouse

of the research platform, the development of the web-based interface in
collaboration with the Loewe partners, management of the data flow,
maintenance of the data base, technical consulting and coordination of
the scientific sub projects as well as communication and coordination
related to data warehouse workshops.
-Administrative and management duties
Requirements:
Candidates should hold a PhD in natural sciences with a strong
background in geoinformatics, experience in statistical modelling and in
handling large data sets. We expect very good knowledge of
Geo-/Biodiversity-databank structures as well as their operation and
design, knowledge in programming tools including i.e. Java, Apache
Tomcat, PHP, MySQL etc., Map-Server technologies and web-based analysis
tools (e.g. R interfaces).
Experience in project management and ability to work efficiently in
multidisciplinary environment are essential. Applicants must provide
evidence of high quality research and a very good publication record in
peer-reviewed journals. The successful applicant will be expected to
publish research papers in peer-reviewed journals, and participate in
international conferences and spend some time with the project partners
and other research teams abroad. A motivated, well organized, creative
and enthusiastic team-player is much appreciated.

University of Giessen in the group of Prof. J. Luterbacher, start of the
position is January 2014

prediction of severe thunderstorms in Australian cities through use of dual-polarised radar, observations and numerical simulations.

Wissenschaftliche/n Mitarbeiter/in f?r Projektkoordination

Dieser Dienstposten hat das Ziel, die anwendungsorientierte Entwicklung von Systemen und Produkten f?r die nutzergerechte Kundenversorgung im Flugwetterdienst sicherzustellen. Der/die Dienstposteninhaber/in stellt dabei die Schnittstelle zwischen Kunden und Entwicklern dar. Nach der ?bernahme des Dienstpostens wird der/die erfolgreiche Bewerber/in u.a. daf?r zust?ndig sein, eine webbasierte Anwendung f?r interaktive Abfragen im Rahmen der meteorologischen Flugvorbereitung zu konzeptionieren, die Entwicklungsarbeiten zu koordinieren sowie ggf. fachlich zu unterst?tzen und, abschlie?end, die Anwendung zu operationalisieren. Die Ausgabe der Anwendung sind beispielsweise Produkte, die relevante meteorologische Parameter entlang einer Flugstrecke extrahieren. Eine andere Aufgabe besteht darin, die Daten des DWD ?ber Standardschnittstellen f?r die Nutzung in Briefingsystemen der Luftfahrt bereitzustellen.
Das Aufgabengebiet umfasst im Wesentlichen folgende T?tigkeiten:
? Koordination der Verfahrens- und Systementwicklungen in der Flugmeteorologie und im internationalen Luftverkehr
o Konzeption und Spezifikation von Systemen und Produkten zur Erfassung oder Vorhersage von flugmeteorologischen Ph?nomenen oder von Methoden zum Datenaustausch und zur Versorgung der internationalen und allgemeinen Luftfahrt, der europ?ischen Flugsicherungen oder der Flugh?fen mit meteorologischen Informationen
o Management der Entwicklungsprojekte zur Operationalisierung der oben genannten Systeme und Produkte
o Mitarbeit bei der Erarbeitung von interdisziplin?ren, wissenschaftlichen oder technischen Verfahren und anschlie?end eigenverantwortliche Operationalisierung der Verfahren im Flugwetterdienst
o Mitarbeit in relevanten internationalen Gremien von ICAO, WMO, SES, FABEC, MET Alliance, o.?.
Unerl?ssliche Qualifikationen zur Aus?bung des Dienstpostens sind:
? Ein erfolgreich abgeschlossenes einschl?giges naturwissenschaftliches Hochschulstudium (z.B. Meteorologie, Physik oder Geowissenschaften)
? Sichere Kenntnisse der englischen Sprache (mind. Level B2 CEFR)
? Bereitschaft zu mehrt?gigen Dienstreisen im In- und Ausland
? Nachgewiesene praktische Erfahrungen von mind. 1 Jahr bei der erfolgreichen Durchf?hrung oder Steuerung von Projekten im Bereich der Softwareentwicklung
? Nachgewiesene praktische Erfahrungen von mind. 1 Jahr in der erfolgreichen Zusammenarbeit in Internationalen Teams bzw. von mehr als 6 Monaten bei nachgewiesener einschl?giger T?tigkeit im Ausland
