Dear Roger,
Would you be able to advertise the following open call for participants through the Met-Jobs mailing list.
Call for participants for a British Council Researcher Links workshop: From Climate Science to Climate Services for Society
Under the British Council Researcher Links scheme we will be holding a bilateral workshop on the above theme in Cape Town, South Africa from the 3th to 6th March 2014, bringing together early career researchers to discuss their work and to build international relationships.
The workshop, coordinated by the UK Met Office and the University of Cape Town, will bring together a multidisciplinary group of dynamic early career researchers, from South Africa and the UK. Participants will work together to examine the value of their research for managing risks and opportunities presented by a changing climate. They will explore how knowledge exchange and collaboration across nations, research areas and with end-users can bring valuable insight and drive innovative development of useful science and services.
We are now inviting Early Career Researchers from the UK or South Africa (within 10 years of receiving their PhD or equivalent research experience), currently employed by in a research institute in either the UK or South Africa, to apply to attend this workshop. All travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Researcher Links programme. The application form along with more details on the initiative can be found at http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/conference/BCRL-Workshop
This application deadline is 18th December 2013. If you have any questions please contact climateservices@metoffice.gov.uk<mailto:climateservices@metoffice.gov.uk>
Many thanks,
Jane Strachan

PhD position in experimental atmospheric cloud physics research at ETH Zurich
The Atmospheric Physics group in the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science (IACETH) at ETH Zurich has an opening for a PhD position with the topic: "How is precipitation initiated in orographic mixed-phase clouds?"
Orographic precipitation is important for water resources as it determines the discharge in many rivers. Typically, precipitation forms in mixed-phase clouds (MPC), consisting of ice crystals and liquid droplets. Because of their complicated structure and dynamics, the level of scientific understanding of MPCs is low. To better understand and accurately represent MPCs in models, measurements over a wide range of particle sizes and at high spatial resolution are crucial.
This project will involve in-situ measurements of the microphysical properties of orographic clouds in the Swiss Alps. The instrumental set-up will include a holographic imager HOLIMO II (Henneberger et al., 2013) which allows the imaging of cloud particles in-situ. Specifically in this project the objective is to establish a cloud measurement platform on a cable car, which will yield cost-efficient measurements of vertical profiles of MPCs in the Swiss Alps thus the ability to study the cloud properties.
The qualifying candidate should have a MSc degree (or equivalent) in physics, atmospheric or environmental sciences. We are looking for applicants with a strong background in experimental work, preferentially with experience in field campaign measurements and/or instrument development. In addition some exposure to or knowledge in cloud physics would be beneficial.
Applications and questions related to the position should be sent to Dr. Jan Henneberger (jan.henneberger@env.ethz.ch). Applications are expected to include a CV (including education, professional experience, and publications) and two names of persons that could be contacted for a reference.
Information on our research group can be found at: www.iac.ethz.ch/groups/lohmann and general information about our institute at www.iac.ethz.ch<http://www.iac.ethz.ch>.
Review of applications will start immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Planned starting date is February/March 2014.

Tenure-track Faculty Positions in Climate: Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary
Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
JOB DESCRIPTION
The MIT Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences has been
undergoing a major expansion of its activities in climate science.
Positions have recently been filled in the areas of atmospheric chemistry,
paleoclimate and ocean biogeochemical cycles. We seek applicants for
further appointments in climate-related fields, especially as they pertain
to observations, models and theory in atmospheric dynamics and physical
oceanography. Preference will be given to junior appointments at the
assistant professor level, but a more senior appointment can be considered
for an individual with exceptional qualifications.
REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidates will have a strong record of accomplishment in
their discipline, a strong commitment to teaching and student advising, and
a keen interest in relating their work to complementary research in the
Department and/or in the MIT/Woods Hole Joint Program in Oceanography.
Joint appointments with other MIT departments can be negotiated as
appropriate.
HOW TO APPLY
Applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, one-page descriptions of
research and teaching plans, and the names, email addresses, and phone
numbers of three professional referees. Please do not ask your referees to
upload letters at the time of application; letters will be requested
directly by MIT.
Questions may be addressed to Prof. John Marshall, Search Committee Chair,
at jmarsh@mit.edu.
Applications are being accepted at Academic Jobs Online. (
https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo)
To receive consideration, a complete application must be received by
February 31, 2014.
