The Atmospheric Sciences Research Center at SUNY University of Albany
invites applications for a postdoctoral research position in satellite
remote sensing and modeling of terrestrial hydrology.

This climate-relevant research will involve extensive data mining, data
analysis, numerical weather forecast model evaluation and refinement, and
satellite data assimilation in support of the international GEWEX GLASS
workgroup initiatives. Strong programming skills in a UNIX/Linux
environment (e.g., C, Fortran, Matlab, and shell scripts) as well as
excellent written and oral communication skills are required. Knowledge and
understanding of coupled land-atmospheric processes and coupled
forecast/climate models is essential. Specialized knowledge in
boundary-layer physics, 4-D Var, and hyperspectral remote sensing of water
vapor/clouds is preferred. The ideal candidate will have advanced skills in
either: the compilation and execution of the Weather Research and
Forecasting (WRF) Model or data assimilation of satellite observations. It
is expected that the appointee will publish lead and co-authored papers
with their advisor and contribute to grant writing efforts.

Candidates must hold a recent Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering,
Atmospheric Sciences, Hydrology, Meteorology, Applied Mathematics, Physics,
or other climate-related science. The Ph.D. must have been earned within
three years of initial appointment to this postdoctoral position.

The position is available immediately and will be an initial 12-month
appointment with the possibility of renewal pending satisfactory
performance. Applications must be submitted online via Interview Exchange
and should include a statement of research experience and interest, a
current CV, and names and contact information (address, email, and
telephone) for three professional references.

For priority consideration, applications should be submitted by January 31.

The Cambridge Earth System Science Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP)has
been awarded 15 studentships from the Natural Environment Research Council,
and other funds may be available to increase this number (studentships to
start in October 2014). The DTP brings together 7 university departments
and the British Antarctic Survey. One of the three themes of the DTP is
Climate and there are project outlines covering a full range of topics
including palaeoclimate, biogeochemical cycles, atmospheric dynamics,
atmospheric chemistry, and climate-cryosphere interactions.

For further details and to apply, please go to:

The Institute for Coastal Research invites applications for a 3 year

Ph.D. position (m/f)
code no. 2013/KS 5

starting March 1st, 2014, within the project REKLIM (Regional Climate Change).

In the frame of the climate initiative REKLIM (<http://www.reklim.de/en/>) of the research centres in the Helmholtz-Association the successful candidate will study the impact of changes in aerosol distribution on the climate in the past decades by applying appropriate statistical methods. One major focus is on the impact on the temporal distribution of precipitation over Northern and Central Europe. At first a realistical, temporal and spatial aerosol distribution over Europe will be compiled, which will then be used in a regional climate model to build a reconstruction of climate changes in the past decades. The thus obtained data record of consistent and homogeneous meteorological quantities forms the necessary basis for the statistical studies, which represent the major part of the work.

The successful candidate will work in the regional climate group at the Institute for Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht. She/he will cooperate with scientists from other Helmholtz centres in the climate initiative REKLIM.

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht expects candidates to hold a university degree in natural sciences and a master thesis rated good or better. A background knowledge in meteorology would an advantage since the study implies the interpretation of complex feedbacks in the Earth?s atmosphere. Good skills in mathematics, statistics, program language FORTRAN, statistics programming language R and basic knowledge of the UNIX operating system is a clear advantage. Good skills in English language are mandatory, basic skills in German language is an advantage but not required. The willingness for traveling is expected since the candidate will present her/his work on international scientific workshops and conferences.

We offer an appropriate salary related to the German public tariff (TV-AVH) plus the usual social benefits for the public employment sector. The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is an equal opportunity employer for women, minorities, and people with disabilities, and strives to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially.

Interested candidates should send their complete applications indicating job offer code no. 2013/KS 5 (as single pdf-file including a short letter of motivation, CV, and list of publications) to our human resources personal@hzg.de.
Application period from December 9th, 2013 to January 17th, 2014

In the research group Theory of Atmospheric Dynamics and Climate at the
Institute of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences of the
Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-University Frankfurt there is a vacancy for a

Research Scientist (Akademische/r Rat/R?tin auf Zeit)

The initial appointment will be for three years.

Applicants should hold a PhD in meteorology, physics, applied
mathematics, fluid dynamics, astronomy or a related field. Expected is a
strong background in theory and/or modeling and a capability for
research in atmosphere dynamics. The specific research field shall be
the theory of mesoscale and sub-mesoscale wave dynamics and its
interaction with larger-scale systems. The ultimate objective is the
improvement of the description of gravity waves in weather and climate
models.

The post offers the opportunity for further scientific qualification
within the German system (Habilitation). Within this framework a modest
participation in teaching in the meteorology program and in attracting
external funding is expected. The research activity is to be embedded
both in a national research initiative on the multi-scale dynamics of
gravity waves, and in the corresponding international scientific community.

Some information on the research group can be found under
http://www2.uni-frankfurt.de/45681958/Theory-of-Atmospheric-Dynamics-and-Climate.
Its focus is on scale interactions in atmosphere dynamics, with
applications to large-scale low-frequency variability and to
gravity-wave dynamics. Middle-atmosphere dynamics is another field of
work. Techniques used include multi-scale asymptotics, stochastic
methods, and numerical simulation. Inquiries should be addressed to
Prof. Dr. Ulrich Achatz (achatz@iau.uni-frankfurt.de).

Applications with the usual documents (CV, diplomas, and a list of
publications) should be sent by January 15, 2014 to Prof. Dr. Ulrich
Achatz, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universit?t Frankfurt, Institut f?r
Atmosph?re und Umwelt, Altenh?ferallee 1, 60438 Frankfurt am Main,
Germany. Applications will be considered beyond this date until the post
has been filled.
