Hello,

a reminder that the closing date for the vacancy of verification scientist has been extended to 31 December 2013.

A reminder that the Met Office operates an application form recruitment process. Please make sure that you provide all relevant evidence for the role on the form. Information provided in attached CVs (not repeated on the form) will not be considered.

Background

The Met Office, as a world leading authority in meteorology, produces and delivers weather forecasts from a range of deterministic and ensemble numerical weather prediction models, which are used to generate a wide array of products to deliver to customers worldwide. The Numerical Modelling section of Weather Science is responsible for the scientific testing, upgrade and maintenance of the operational forecast modelling system, the Unified Model (MetUM). This includes all configurations from the high-resolution km-scale (deterministic UKV and MOGREPS-UK ensemble). The model diagnostics and novel verification methods team's purpose is to keep up with the developments in the modelling system through the development and application of appropriate methods for measuring forecast performance, analysing systematic forecast behaviour and diagnosing model errors. This also involves exploiting new data types. Invariably the objective is to add new methods and data sources to the operational systems which are used to monitor routine performance. It is an exciting interface with many opportunities for interacting with the model development teams on the one hand, and forecasters on the other. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop, support and use scientific software to deliver world-leading science outcomes for a high-profile, world-class scientific organisation, with in house super-computing capabilities.

Job Purpose
To apply scientific and technical knowledge to contribute to monitoring, detecting and diagnosing the origins of model systematic behaviour through the use of existing, and development of new methods for the improvement of the modelling system.

About the role
Working in a small, talented team of scientists, and collaborating with colleagues and contacts from within the Met Office and beyond, you will monitor, detect and diagnose the origins of model systematic behaviour by using existing - and developing and integrating new - methods for the improvement of the modelling system. Your technical and scientific expertise will help us to diagnose where changes are necessary to further improve the accuracy of our forecasts. Variety is the key word here: one day, you could be looking at cloud processes to improve forecasts for our aviation customers; the next, you're working with one of our external partners, the Environment Agency for example, to further improve flood forecasting.

About you
You're a scientist with impressive programming skills. You will have a 2:1 degree (or above) in a physics/mathematics-based science subject and, ideally, relevant postgraduate experience and/or qualifications. If you're joining us at a more senior level, we will also expect you to have significant relevant experience. When it comes to programming, you'll be confident writing scientific software (Fortran, Shell scripting, Python), and at a more senior level, you will have a demonstrable ability in designing and developing large complex codes. We would also like you be skilled in the use of appropriate data sets and data analysis techniques (and comfortable working with large data sets).

As well as your technical and analytical strengths, you must have confident communication skills, in writing and in person. It is important that you're able to convey your views clearly and concisely, to both scientific and non-scientific colleagues. With a collaborative approach, you enjoy sharing insight, knowledge and experience with your scientific colleagues. Joining us at a more senior level, you will also be expected to lead diagnostic activities and train your colleagues outside the team in the use of diagnostic and verification tools.
