University of Leeds
Research Fellow in Convective Cloud Dynamics
Fixed term for 39 months
We seek an ambitious scientist with interests in Geophysical Fluid
Dynamics to develop a programme of original research into the dynamics of
moist convection in the atmosphere. This research will advance our
understanding of deep convective clouds which govern the thermodynamics of
many regional weather systems worldwide and can generate strong winds and
heavy rainfall. You will develop new theoretical and conceptual
understanding of convective cloud dynamics. To support this theoretical
work you will conduct numerical modelling of convective clouds studying
the basic fluid dynamics of plumes, thermals, updraughts and downdraughts
within storms, and investigating the interactions of these systems with
the larger-scale circulation. You will be part of a large research team at
Leeds and the Met Office, which includes expertise in observations and
modelling of convective clouds. You will be expected to spend some periods
of time working at the Met Office in Exeter.
The theoretical results will influence the next generation of Numerical
Weather Prediction models and climate models. They will also advance our
conceptual understanding of climate change and climate variability in the
tropics and will influence the interpretation of climate predictions at
local level.
The work will also proceed in close collaboration with a number of
researchers in the National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) at the
University of Leeds. You will join an enthusiastic and motivated School,
which aims to achieve the highest standards in its research and teaching.
You will be expected to contribute to the ongoing research in atmospheric
science in the School. Your work will lead to significant publications in
atmospheric and climate science and you will also present your research at
national and international meetings.
You must have a PhD (or be close to submission) in a quantitative physical
science, such as Physics, Applied Mathematics or Meteorology, and a strong
interest in and some experience in some area of Fluid Dynamics, with
experience of numerical modelling. You will have experience with
programming on a unix/linux operating system and excellent communication
skills.
