Urban gust estimates for insurance portfolio loss
NERC Industrial CASE Award (With RMS - Thomas Loridan plus others)
This project proposes to revisit the methodology used by a leading risk analysis company's approach to calculating roughness of cities and gust correction factors to improve wind hazard assessments. This will draw on new characterisations of urban land cover and surface roughness and re-analysis of an extensive database of gust observations in urban areas across the world. Updates to the current modelling framework, for use in an operational setting, will be proposed.

DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF READING
PhD studentships are available for UK residents and students from other
European Union countries. Studentships cover University Fees and a
tax-free Maintenance Grant.
Studentships are funded by SCENARIO (a new Natural Environment Research
Council (NERC) Doctoral Training Partnership), the NERC Industrial CASE
scheme, and other sources. The Department is also involved in the new
"Mathematics for Planet Earth" Centre for Doctoral Training, funded by the
Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). Applications
from self-funding students are also always welcomed.
Topics cover weather and climate science, Earth observation
and space weather - some are available to start as soon as possible,
others are available for October 2014 start.
Applicants should have, or expect to get, at least an upper second class
degree in physics, mathematics, or a closely related physical or
environmental science. Other candidates with a good performance in a
relevant Masters degree will also be considered. No prior knowledge of
meteorology is required.
