Dear all,

A fully funded PhD studentship in optical instrumentation, atmospheric aerosols and radiative transfer is available at the University of Exeter, with industrial CASE sponsorship from the Met Office.

The project will focus on improving the representation of aerosol direct-radiation interactions in global climate models through a combination of laboratory, observational and modelling activities. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and testing a new state-of-the-art instrument for aerosol optical property measurements on the NERC/Met Office BAe146 research aircraft (www.faam.ac.uk). He/she will deploy the instrument during focussed measurement campaigns in the UK and internationally and use resulting data in conjunction with radiative transfer modelling to test the consistency between measured and modelled spectral flux data in the presence of partially-absorbing aerosol. This work will be used to improve the representation of aerosol-radiation interactions in atmospheric models used for climate prediction.

Primary supervisors: Professor Jim Haywood (University of Exeter), Dr Justin Langridge (Met Office)
Secondary supervisor: Professor Bill Barnes (University of Exeter)

Application criteria: Applicants should have or expect to achieve at least a 1st or 2:1 BSc degree or equivalent in physics, chemistry, engineering or similar numerate subject with a strong practical component. The candidate should have an interest in instrumentation, atmospheric physics, optics and/or climate. Suitable taught courses at Masters level will be provided. The candidate will be expected to travel widely within the UK and internationally both for measurement campaigns and for presentation of results at national and international conferences.

For informal enquires please contact Prof Jim Haywood (J.M.Haywood@exeter.ac.uk) or Dr Justin Langridge (justin.langridge@metoffice.gov.uk). Further information can be found at http://www.exeter.ac.uk/studying/funding/award/?id=1435

Empa is a Swiss Science and Technology Institution of the ETH-Domain. The Laboratory for Air Pollution / Environmental Technology has an opening for a

PhD Candidate on
Real-time atmospheric measurements of N2O isotopomers to identify sources and hot spots in northern Switzerland

The PhD project is embedded in multi-disciplinary research, in co-operation with the KIT in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Dr. Ralf Kiese, Prof. Dr. Klaus Butterbach Bahl), which aims at the identification of N2O source regions and processes in northern Switzerland. The PhD candidate at Empa will focus on real-time analysis of N2O isotopomers by laser spectroscopy. In an initial laboratory phase, the student will improve the performance of our analytical technique with respect to sensitivity and precision at ambient mixing ratios. In an extended field campaign, N2O isotope measurements at the Berom?nster tall tower will be made for the first time. The on-site applicability of the instrument to distinguish N2O production processes will be demonstrated at different spatial scales. The results will be combined with atmospheric modelling to determine the temporal and spatial variability of N2O source strengths and isotopic signatures in northern Switzerland. In a complementary bottom-up approach, N2O isotope measurements will be used to validate biogeochemical soil models developed in a coordinated PhD project at KIT.

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate with a Master?s degree in chemistry, environmental sciences or a related discipline, and a strong interest in isotope analysis, instrumental development and data analysis. We expect excellent English language skills, knowledge of German would be advantageous.

For further information contact Dr. Joachim Mohn, phone +41 58 765 4687, e?mail: joachim.mohn@empa.ch

Applications should be accompanied by a CV, a letter of motivation and addresses of two referees.

All applications must be submitted online at www.empa.ch/job
