ForWind is the joint Center for Wind Energy Research of the Universities of Oldenburg, Hannover and Bremen. ForWind bundles a wide range of wind energy research activities in the areas of physics and engineering sciences and provides independent scientific co-operation in industry-oriented projects. ForWind is offering the position of a

Research Scientist
(Salary according to 75 % E 13 TV-L)

for two years to pursue a PhD on the integration of Renewable Energies into Europe?s future power supply system. The extension by one further year is intended to prepare a PhD thesis. The successful candidate works in the research group ?Wind Energy Meteorology? of ForWind in a team of physicists and meteorologists. The participation in international research projects, conferences and workshops as well as international cooperation and short-term exchange with other research groups is intended and supported. ForWind is equipped with a high-performance computing cluster with 2200 cores dedicated to wind energy research.

Topic

The integration of Renewable Energies into Europe?s future power supply system requires continuous monitoring of feed-in by renewable energies to operate the power system efficiently and at lowest costs. Ideally the feed-in at all wind farms is available in real-time. However, currently the availability and usage of wind farm data is very different from country to country and often quite inadequate. Thus, a well-accepted upscaling methodology shall be proposed to set up a network of reference wind parks in Europe that is required to guarantee a skillful estimation of the total wind power feed-in at every moment. The necessary simulations are based on mesoscale atmospheric weather data and results are validated with observed wind power data. New data sources relevant to monitor large scale wind power shall be explored. The findings of the upscaling methodology shall be finally applied to short and long-term wind power forecasts for Europe.

Profile

An academic university degree in natural sciences like physics, mathematics, meteorology or a related topic is required. Knowledge in programming languages, such as FORTRAN or C/C++ and shell scripting and experience in the handling of large data volumes, statistics and data analysis is essential. Good knowledge in atmospheric physics, atmospheric flow simulations and experience in wind energy would be an advantage.
We expect excellent spoken and written command of English, very good communication skills and the ability to work in a team of young scientists, but also to work independently and self-organised with a high level of direct responsibility. Furthermore, we expect the strong willingness to learn the German language.

The Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg strives to increase the proportion of women in science, so we especially encourage female candidates to apply.
Handicapped applicants will be given preference in the case of equal qualifications.

Contact

For questions regarding these vacancies, please contact Dr. Lueder von Bremen, Phone ++49 (0)441/798-5071.

Please send your complete application including a covering letter, CV, list of references and publications, copies of relevant certificates and degrees to Dr. Lueder von Bremen, Universit?t Oldenburg/ForWind, Ammerl?nder Heerstrasse 136, 26129 Oldenburg or by email to lueder.von.bremen@forwind.de. Please add the abstract of your last thesis and/or any publication. Applications should be handed in until March 9th, 2014. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for week 13/2014.
