Two PhD positions in planetary atmosphere modeling
Two 3-year positions are available with the International Max Planck Research School for Solar System Science (IMPRS) at Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (www.mps.mpg.de<http://www.mps.mpg.de>). We are seeking highly motivated PhD students to work on two projects.
One project is on developing the state-of-the-art general circulation model of Jupiter's stratosphere, an atmospheric layer that extends for more than 350km above the visible cloud top. It includes an implementation of the new radiation code, studying physics, dynamics and their interactions on this giant gas planet. This work will be done in conjunction with the preparation for the JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) mission.
The second project is on application of a comprehensive Mars general circulation model to studying dynamics and vertical coupling in the atmosphere of our red neighbor. Mars is the second best known planet after Earth. Understanding its atmospheric dynamics is equally important for further Mars exploration as well as revealing fundamental processes on the terrestrial-like planets. A significant part of the work will be on performing numerical simulations and their validation with observational data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft, which is set to arrive to the Mars orbit in September 2014.
Qualified candidates must have completed a Master's Degree in physics, mathematics, meteorology or equivalent. The ideal candidate should be interested in atmospheric science, in applying analytical and computational mathematical methods, have a familiarity and/or experience with numerical modeling, and good programming skills. Proficiency in FORTRAN and some familiarity with multiprocessing would be a great asset. Good knowledge of English (written and spoken) to work in our international environment is required.
Consideration of candidates will begin immediately, and last until the position is filled. Inquiries and applications (CV stating your education experience and interests) should be sent to Dr. Paul Hartogh (hartogh@mps.mpg.de<mailto:hartogh@mps.mpg.de>), and/or Dr. Alexander Medvedev (medvedev@mps.mpg.de<mailto:medvedev@mps.mpg.de>).

PhD Opportunities in the "Environment East" Doctoral Training Partnership (EnvEast DTP)
We are pleased to be able to offer further funded Studentships in the EnvEast Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP); a collaboration between the Universities of East Anglia, Kent and Essex and 20 other research partners. Between three and four additional Studentships will be available for entry in October 2014, to join the 12 Studentships already awarded. EnvEast will support more than 60 PhD students enrolling over the next five years. They will join a vibrant research community of other PhD research students from the UK and across the globe.
The EnvEast DTP will provide training and research opportunities notably in three key themes of international significance:
Climate, Marine and Atmospheric Systems
Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Sustainable Development
Natural Hazards
The partnership draws together relevant expertise from a complementary set of research organisations to train scientists capable of making outstanding contributions to their discipline and able to apply their knowledge to the challenges facing the UK economy, the quality of life for its citizens, and the state of the global environment.
The deadline for applications is midnight on 25th April 2014.
Please see https://www.uea.ac.uk/science/graduate-school/home/prospective-students/enveast-nerc-doctoral-training-partnership for full details and instructions on how to apply.
Please keep checking the web pages as further projects may be added over the next one to two weeks.
In general full studentship funding for 3.5 years of study is available for UK residents, while most EU applicants would be eligible for fees-only funding. Most non-EU nationals will NOT be eligible for funding. We ask applicants to check their eligibility carefully before applying because the eligibility rules are complex.
