High-Resolution Modelling in Singapore
Research Scientist/Senior Research Scientist
Salaries will be in the ranges of Research Scientist (SGD 68,000-SGD 119,000 and Senior Research Scientist (SGD 84,000-SGD 180,000). The starting salary and the level of entry will depend upon qualifications and experience.
Appointments will be for a 2-year initial period.
Deadline for applications: 21 Apr 2014
The Centre for Climate Research Singapore (CCRS) was formally launched in March 2013 (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngpBD4Gq-Uw). The centre?s focus is on a number of weather and climate research areas which are of importance to Singapore and the wider Southeast Asian region. The centre is well supported with long-term core funding from the Singapore Government. In addition to the establishment of a number of research positions, a dedicated CRAY XC-30 has been installed to support numerical modelling activities.
CCRS is expanding its efforts to develop state-of-the-art NWP capabilities for operational prediction, as well as to become a regional centre of expertise in high-resolution NWP research and development. Towards this end, CCRS has a formal collaboration with the UK Met Office to develop enhanced high-resolution NWP capabilities for Singapore. In addition, work is planned with local universities to use the same modelling systems, configured at various resolutions, to investigate regional aerosol/cloud interactions and the effects of Singapore?s urbanisation on its local climate. Lower resolution version of the modelling system will be also be used in various climate change related investigations.
The main modelling tool that is used in both the weather and climate research within CCRS is a regional version of the Unified Model, developed by the UK Met Office and is now used operationally under license by a number of countries worldwide.
We are seeking to recruit a scientist with a strong background in the use of the Unified Model.
The specific job responsibilities will include:
? Carrying out research to improve the quality of forecasts produced by the high-resolution ?SINGV? NWP model.
? Diagnosis of SINGV performance and its data assimilation system, in terms of relevant high-impact weather parameters, e.g. heavy rainfall, wind gusts, etc.
? Participation in a number of internal and collaborative projects in which the Unified Model will be the modelling tool employed.
? Provision of training and scientific/technical advice to other team members in the use of the Unified Model.
? Significant contribution to the presentation, publication and documentation of work internally and externally in order to develop our scientific capability in high-resolution regional modelling.
Candidate Requirements
Essential
? A PhD (or equivalent research experience) in a relevant physical science such as meteorology, oceanography, mathematics or physics.
? At least 4 years of experience in development/testing of configurations of the Unified Model.
? Demonstrated ability to undertake research work both individually and as part of a team.
? A high level of proficiency in scientific computing.
? Ability to coach less experienced team members in the use of the Unified Model system.
? Good communication skills.
Applications Details:
Interested candidates are invited to apply online at www.nea.gov.sg/careers or the Singapore Public Service Job Portal at www.careers.gov.sg . Alternatively, you can submit your resume to NEA_MSS_Contact@nea.gov.sg.
Only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
