Postdoctoral Fellow in Climate Modeling

Applications are invited for a full time position on the Postdoc/Senior Postdoc level in the Climate Physics group of Prof. Reto Knutti at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science at ETH Zurich.

We are seeking a physical scientist with research experience in running and applying coupled global climate models in one of the following areas: quantification of uncertainties in global and regional projections, atmospheric feedbacks, ocean heat uptake, the use of observations to evaluate and constrain models, detection and attribution of climate change or statistical methods to analyze climate model results. The applicant is expected to take leadership in one of the research fields noted above, including the supervision of students. The position is for one year initially and can be extended. The starting date is flexible. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.

Applicants must have a PhD in climate sciences or related subjects, working knowledge in at least one climate model, experience with Fortran, shell scripting, UNIX/Linux operating systems, ideally with high performance computing, and with data analysis systems (such as NCL, Matlab, NetCDF, etc.). Regardless of background, the successful applicant will have an interactive personality, motivation to work with cutting-edge numerical climate models run on large supercomputers, the ability to carry out research in an interdisciplinary and international environment, and a strong desire to disseminate the results in conference talks and journal articles. Fluency in English (written and spoken) and strong reporting skills, in particular experience in publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals, is required.

For further information please contact Prof. Reto Knutti by e-mail reto.knutti@env.ethz.ch (no applications) and visit our website www.iac.ethz.ch.

Applications with CV, publication list, a statement of motivation and research interest and how those would fit into the group, names and contact details of three professional references and electronic versions of the most important publication should be sent online with attention to:
ETH Zurich, Mr. Rolf Oertli, Human Resources, CH-8092 Z?rich.

OCEAN ALTIMETRY RESEARCH SCIENTIST
--------------------------------------------------------------

Directorate of Science and Technology- National Oceanography Centre (NOC)

About the role:

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to contribute to NOC activities in radar altimetry over the oceans and the coastal zone. This Scientist will work within the NOC Satellite Oceanography sub-group on the development of innovative approaches in pulse-limited and SAR-mode radar altimetry and on the improvement of sea level retrieval from altimetry in the coastal zone. He/she will support validation of the altimetric products against in-situ observation and models.

The National Oceanography Centre, part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is the UK?s national research organisation delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean, and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world. NOC is at the vanguard of international marine research, tackling the major global environmental research issues and translational impacts to benefit society (http://noc.ac.uk/). The NOC Satellite Oceanography sub-group delivers research, consultancy and training in many aspects of ocean remote sensing and has long-standing expertise in satellite altimetry, where NOC scientists are taking a leading role in the development of SAR altimetry over oceans and the development of improved altimeter products in coastal and marginal seas.

We provide an exciting, dynamic and outstanding research environment supported by research scientists, technologists and engineers. The facilities include super-computing facilities, world-class analytical laboratories and access to our global marine observation infrastructure

This is a 3-year Fixed Term Appointment position offered on NERC terms and conditions. We offer a competitive remuneration package, including a RCUK pension scheme, 30 days annual leave with a further 10.5 public/privilege days.
