Package : Fixed term, full time (initially for 2 months with an extension to March 2015), School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences
Job category/type : Fixed Term, Full time, Research
Job description :
The MACC-II Project provides data records on atmospheric composition for recent years, observations for monitoring present conditions and analyses and forecasts of the distribution of greenhouse gases, reactive gases, and aerosols, for a few days ahead. Aerosol radiative forcing is estimated from the analysis, using methods previously applied to satellite retrievals.
We are looking for someone to work on refining those aerosol radiative forcing estimates and provide a state-of-the-art assessment of their uncertainties.

Research Associate Position in Greenhouse Gas Remote Sensing at University of Leicester, UK

The position is initially for 2 years
Salary Grade 7 - ?31,644 to ?36,661 per annum

At Leicester we're going places. Ranked in the top 20 universities in Britain our aim is to climb further. A commitment to high quality fused with an inclusive academic culture is our hallmark and led the Times Higher Education to describe us as "elite without being elitist".
Satellite remote sensing of major greenhouse gases such as CO2 and CH4 is a novel research area that can lead to a much better understanding of sources and sinks of these greenhouse gases. This will not only help to develop more reliable forecasts of our future climate but it will also provide key data in support of policy makers involved in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The European Space Agency ESA has recently launched a major activity for the development of essential climate variables from satellite observations which includes greenhouse gases (GHG-CCI project) as one of their themes. Our group at University of Leicester is one of the main partners for the greenhouse gas theme.

We are seeking a Research Associate for the ESA GHG-CCI project to further evolve our retrieval methods for CO2 and CH4 from satellites and to apply it the Japanese GOSAT satellite and the upcoming NASA OCO-2 mission to generate global, well characterized long-term datasets that will allow detailed assessments of model calculations.
Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to Dr Hartmut Boesch on hb100@le.ac.uk or 0116 252 2273.

The closing date for this post is midnight on 23 April 2014.

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment
Research Council (NERC), aims to undertake a world-class programme of
scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential
regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

The dramatic decrease in Arctic sea ice over the past few decades is a
clear indicator of climate change, yet in the Antarctic there has been a
contemporaneous increase in sea ice extent. Scientists at BAS have
recently shown that the positive Antarctic trend is predominately wind
driven. However, it remains unclear whether the ultimate drivers of
these changes are anthropogenic or not. Moreover, the present generation
of coupled atmosphere-ocean climate models almost uniformly produce a
decline in Antarctic sea ice, suggesting that they are failing to
correctly simulate key components of the climate system. As sea ice
plays an important role within the Earth System, considerable
uncertainty must therefore be attached to model predictions of future
climate.

Based within the Climate programme at our Cambridge office, you will be
part of a team investigating this recent increase in Antarctic sea ice.
You will be responsible for using state-of-the-art climate models to: i)
attribute the cause of the Antarctic sea ice increase, and ii) improve
modelled Antarctic sea-ice trends by using new, optimal configurations
of the ocean and sea-ice components. This work forms part of a
collaborative NERC project between climate scientists and oceanographers
from BAS, the National Oceanography Centre and the UK Met Office Hadley
Centre.

Cloud Physicist/Modeller PDRA for Microphysics of Antarctic Clouds (MAC) project

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

We are looking to appoint an atmospheric scientist to take part in a three year research programme into the microphysics of Antarctic clouds. The person appointed would take part in field programme involving an instrumented aircraft during the 2014/15 Antarctic summer. They will be responsible for running the Polar WRF model to provide forecast support for the project. After the field programme has been completed they will help to develop new cloud parameterisation for the WRF model based on the results of the field campaign. They will also consider how these parameterisation can be used in global climate models.

Qualifications: PhD in numerate field (or equivalent research experience)

Duration: 36 months fixed term appointment

Salary: Salary will be in the range of ?26,715 to ?27,442 per annum. We offer a generous benefits package including a defined salary pension scheme, free car parking, flexible working hours and 30 days annual leave.
