The IASS is an international, interdisciplinary research institute located in Potsdam, Germany
financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Federal State of
Brandenburg. It is devoted to promoting science and research for global sustainability, particularly in
the areas of climate change, the earth systems and social pathways to sustainability. The Sustainable
Interactions with the Atmosphere (SIWA) cluster, under the direction of Prof. Dr. Mark Lawrence, is
investigating ways of reducing humans? unintentional negative influences on the atmosphere. One
major focus is on the potential for rapid returns by controlling short-lived climate-forcing pollutants
(SLCPs).

The SIWA Project ClimPol (Short-lived Climate-forcing Pollutants: Research Needs and Pathways to
Policy Implementation) pursues a transdisciplinary research approach by collaborating with
stakeholders from policy, science and society in order to co-generate integrated strategies at the
interface of air pollution and climate change. One of the goals of the ClimPol project is to generate
useable knowledge, through an inclusive, iterative process, that can inform decision-making. Such
knowledge is an important basis for an integrative path to sustainable development. With a specific
focus on short-lived climate-forcing pollutants, the larger themes of air pollution and climate change
the project also encompasses a variety of other disciplines, including atmospheric science, health,
ecosystems science, and sustainable transport and energy use.

The Position:
The IASS is currently seeking applications for a
research assistant (m/f)

Research Associate Position in Greenhouse Gas Remote Sensing at University of Leicester, UK (new application deadline: Sunday 27 April)

The position is initially for 2 years
Salary Grade 7 - ?31,644 to ?36,661 per annum

At Leicester we're going places. Ranked in the top 20 universities in Britain our aim is to climb further. A commitment to high quality fused with an inclusive academic culture is our hallmark and led the Times Higher Education to describe us as "elite without being elitist".
Satellite remote sensing of major greenhouse gases such as CO2 and CH4 is a novel research area that can lead to a much better understanding of sources and sinks of these greenhouse gases. This will not only help to develop more reliable forecasts of our future climate but it will also provide key data in support of policy makers involved in efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The European Space Agency ESA has recently launched a major activity for the development of essential climate variables from satellite observations which includes greenhouse gases (GHG-CCI project) as one of their themes. Our group at University of Leicester is one of the main partners for the greenhouse gas theme.

We are seeking a Research Associate for the ESA GHG-CCI project to further evolve our retrieval methods for CO2 and CH4 from satellites and to apply it the Japanese GOSAT satellite and the upcoming NASA OCO-2 mission to generate global, well characterized long-term datasets that will allow detailed assessments of model calculations.
Informal enquiries are welcome and should be made to Dr Hartmut Boesch on hb100@le.ac.uk<mailto:hb100@le.ac.uk> or 0116 252 2273.

The closing date for this post is midnight on 27 April 2014.

Postdoctoral positions available
Center for Prototype Climate Modeling/NYU Abu Dhabi Institute
Andrew Majda (PI), Olivier Pauluis (co-PI), Shafer Smith (co-PI)

The Center for Prototype Climate Modeling (CPCM) is a new interdisciplinary research unit of the NewYork University Abu Dhabi Institute, located within NYU?s Abu Dhabi campus. The Institute seeks to bea world-class center of cutting-edge research, scholarship, and cultural activity, offering outstanding facilities, significant research funding, and a vigorous intellectual environment. The overarching goal of CPCM is to develop innovative approaches and algorithms in climate forecasting, especially as they relate to the tropics and subtropics, to improve the accuracy of climate change predictions. The core activities of the Center are focused on two related themes: (I) The development of new methods, including diagnostics, data assimilation, parametrization, and prediction; and (II) the application of these methodsto critical problems in the dynamics of the tropical and subtropical atmosphere and ocean. The Center currently consists of the PI and co-PIs, two senior scientists, five postdoctoral researchers, one support scientist and a center manager.

Currently there are two postdoctoral research positions available. While talent and exceptional research in relevant fields are paramount, we especially encourage applications from researchers with expertise in ocean circulation and biogeochemical modeling, mesoscale and submesoscale dynamics, and air-sea interaction. Postdoctoral research fellows will work closely with the PI, co-PI Smith and senior scientist Zouhair Lachbar. Appointments are offered for two-year periods, contingent upon positive annual reviews; extensions for longer periods are possible in exceptional cases. The annual salary is in the range $65K-$80K, depending on qualifications. NYU Abu Dhabi offers very substantial benefits, including allowances above and beyond salary for housing, transportation, and annual home visits, in addition to full health insurance and an attractive retirement plan. All positions will be based in Abu Dhabi, but researchers may spend a few months per year at the Courant Institute in New York City.

Applicants should send a CV and the names of three professional references via email to our Center
Manager, Asma Kamal (asma.kamal@nyu.edu<mailto:asma.kamal@nyu.edu>). Review of applications will begin May 1, 2014 and will
continue until suitable candidates are hired.
