/*** Atmospheric transport modeler position ***

In the framework of several research projects, we are looking for a
scientist with a PhD degree in meteorology or a related field (e.g.,
atmospheric physics or chemistry) with a demonstrated record of
publishing in peer-reviewed journals. The position can be filled at the
post-doc level but could also be permanent, depending on the
qualification of the successful applicant./

The successful candidate will have experience with atmospheric models
(preferably Lagrangian particle dispersion models) and an interest in
the combined use of observation data and model results. We are seeking
an individual with substantial coding experience who can work
independently but who also enjoys working in a team. The applicant
should have broad interests and be flexible to work on different topics.

The position will be located in the FLEXPART group within the ATMOS
department of NILU. We offer the candidate an exciting international
atmosphere (currently six different nationalities) in one of Europe's
leading research groups on atmospheric transport modelling. Our current
projects focus on Arctic air pollution and climate, the development of
FLEXPART, inverse modelling to determine the emissions of greenhouse
gases, aerosols, volcanic ash and radioactivity, but we also study many
other topics. The candidate is expected to work on existing projects but
there will be some possibilities to choose preferred working fields,
depending on the interests of the other group members. Within the
department, there are also excellent possibilities for collaboration,
for instance with top scientists working on remote sensing, contaminant
research, greenhouse gas research, and aerosol science.

Forwarded from CLIMLIST...

Communications Officer at the Climate Dynamics and Impact Unit (UDIC)
and the Laboratory of the Atmosphere and Oceans (LAO).

LOCATION

IC3 Headquarters in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

The Institut Catal? de Ci?ncies del Clima (IC3) is a climate research
institute created in 2008 by the Government of Catalonia and the
University of Barcelona, aiming at understanding climate variability and
change at both global and regional improving predictions and
projections, the dynamics and theory underlying those changes and the
impact on society. Linked to these goals, IC3 works on understanding and
simulating how global change modulates variability and change in society
ecosystems to provide better climate services.
IC3?s mandate is to become a leading international centre for climate
research in Europe, with a regional focus on the Mediterranean area. IC3
aims to perform quality research on basic and applied climate sciences,
while informing society and stakeholders on future climate risks.
Working languages are English, Catalan and Spanish. More information
about the IC3 activities is available from the following link: <www.ic3.cat>

Within IC3, the Unit for Climate Dynamics and Impacts (UDIC), led by the
ICREA research Professor Xavier Rod?, is devoted to the understanding of
processes responsible for climate variability and the Unit is also
particularly involved in the improvement of the knowledge and simulation
of climate impacts, particularly the effects climate has on health,
energy, food and the water cycle. The Laboratory for the Atmosphere and
Oceans (LAO), led by the research Professor Josep Anton Morgu?, is a
research laboratory mainly devoted to the generation of new climate
datasets of special relevance to understand climate variability, climate
change and how the impacts of those changes affect societies and
ecosystems.

The two groups run a very ambitious monitoring program called CLIMADAT,
funded by the ?La Caixa? Foundation, that represents the first and
unique large-scale attempt to date to understand greenhouse gases
dynamics and their impacts on highly-sensitive ecosystems in Spain. The
project, initially ran for 5 years, has established an unprecedented
network of eight last-generation monitoring stations (<www.climadat.es>).
We are now seeking for a highly skilled and pushing young communications
officer, who can take the lead in communicating and disseminating the
very main aspects of the project, together with the search of new
partnerships and funding opportunities.

description and main duties
Contract for developing a communications plan and ongoing activities for
the Climadat project, participate in the overall communications strategy
of the UDIC Unit and LAO, and take the main responsibility in
communicating results to the press and media. The applicant, as head of
UDIC and LAO communications office, will prepare dissemination
activities related to the goals of the contracting Units and if needed,
also for IC3, in the field of climate research in addition to those
specific to the CLIMADAT project. Fundraising seeking activities are
also expected from the candidate and in this sense; the candidate must
have skills and experience in mentoring search and in establishing
partnerships and alliances with other centers, institutions, private
firms and donors. The candidate is expected to also write regularly
activity reports and technical justifications for the funding bodies.

DESIRED SKILLS / QUALIFICATIONS

PhD in climate sciences or similar is mandatory. Ideal candidates will
have several of the following attributes:
- Proven capacity and previous experience of at least 3 years in a
similar position is required. If experience is less, the candidate will
be not considered for the job post.
- Fluent English is a mandatory requirement that the candidate should
demonstrate presenting the corresponding diplomas, while fluency in
Spanish and Catalan will be also valued.
- Flexibility in travelling around Spain to visit the CLIMADAT network
and interact with the local stakeholders and media is a requirement, as
well as availability to visit foreign institutions.
- Capacity to write proposals, manuscripts and to work with other
colleagues in a highly collaborative environment will be valued.

CONDITIONS AND APPLICATION PROCEDURES

The position is opened for 12 months with a possibility for extension
for a second year depending on performance. The position will start
preferably in May 2014 or as soon as possible after that date. The
salary will be commensurate with experience. Salary complements will be
possible in connection with private funds raised by the candidate.
Selected final candidates should ask for two letters of recommendation
from former employers. Possibility for an immediate incorporation will
be strongly considered.

To apply, please send and email to <jobs@ic3.cat> with your CV and a
letter of intent describing the interests of the candidate and how
she/he intends to develop the communication activities and the following
subject ?UDIC and LAO Communications Officer?.

Following a successful bid with the Austrian National Science
Foundation, the University of Graz is currently offering 16 positions
for PhD candidates and one position as a PostDoc coordinator in the new
Doctoral Programme ?Climate Change ? Uncertainties, Thresholds and
Coping Strategies?. This Programme operates in a
highly interdisciplinary fashion covering natural scientists as much as
economists and includes climate ethics. Please find the details at
<http://dk-climate-change.uni-graz.at/en/>, where (see tab ?THESIS
TOPICS?) also preliminary topics for the PhD theses are listed.

Application deadline will be May 28, 2014, with an expected start of
employment October 1. Candidates are expected to suggest which topic(s)
they would see themselves best qualified. Each topic is assigned to one
University of Graz faculty member who will also acting as the primary
PhD advisor. One faculty member (this is me) is affiliated to IIASA and
not to the university, with otherwise full university integration.

Prospective candidates are very welcome to contact me for further
information or to informally discuss the openings, especially if they
are interested in the topic I will be responsible for (?Scenarios for a
low carbon society ? sector agriculture?).
