"Circulations in the abyssal ocean driven by geothermal and hydrothermal fluxes?
http://noc.ac.uk/f/content/downloads/2014/OSCAR-PhD-studentship-2014.pdf
Supervisors: Miguel ?ngel Morales Maqueda (NOC), Richard Hobbs (University of Durham)
The National Oceanography Centre seeks a 3 year PhD candidate to work on an exciting project to investigate the interactions between geothermal/hydrothermal fluxes and fluid flows in the abyssal ocean.
Applicants should possess, or expect to graduate with, a first class or upper 2nd class degree in a numerate science, such as physics, mathematics, physical oceanography or meteorology, and have an enthusiasm to engage in numerical modelling. Previous knowledge of ocean sciences is not essential. At least some exposure to computer programming is essential. A successful candidate will display a willingness to swiftly engage with the physical aspects of the problem though no previous experience or training is expected. Funding is available for UK nationals and other EU nationals that have resided in the UK for three years prior to commencing the studentship.
Applicants should send a CV and covering letter to Dr Morales Maqueda (see project details for contact details). Applications will be reviewed until the funds are allocated.

Good afternoon,
Please can I advertise the following post:
University Of Leeds
School of Earth and Environment
Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science
Research Fellow in Global Modelling of Dust Chemistry
Ref: ENVEE0245
Fixed term for 1 year
This position is part of a collaboration between geochemists and atmospheric modellers in the School of Earth and Environment. The aim of the project is to determine how phosphorus is liberated from minerals in airborne dust particles during chemical ageing in the atmosphere. The conversion of phosphorus minerals to soluble forms during atmospheric transport may be a key process controlling how this important nutrient becomes available to marine biota.
You will be involved in the implementation of new laboratory kinetic data into a global aerosol model and simulation of how the understandings affect the deposition of soluble phosphorus into the ocean. New geochemical measurements have already been made in Leeds Cohen laboratories. You will work with the geochemistry experts to incorporate these new results in the global aerosol model. The research will involve development of new approaches to simulating in the model how the interaction of dust particles with chemical components in the model releases soluble phosphorus. The modified model will then be used to assess the global impact of these new chemical mechanisms. The modelling part of the research project is led by Prof Ken Carslaw, in collaboration with Prof Michael Krom.
You will have a PhD (or close to submission) and expertise in a relevant area of atmospheric modelling or chemical simulation. You will be able to demonstrate commitment to publication of original results at an international level.
The University of Leeds' commitment to women in science has been recognised with a national accolade. The University has received the Athena Swan Bronze Award in recognition of our success in recruiting, retaining and promoting women in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET). The Faculty of Environment are in the process of preparing an application for an Athena Swan award to recognise our commitment and work in these areas.
The University also offers family friendly policies including generous maternity and paternity leave; full details of the policies can be found here http://hr.leeds.ac.uk/homepage/4/policies.
