A fully funded PhD studentship opportunity is available in the School of Geography, Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham to investigate high resolution leaf fall monitoring and low adhesion forecasting using hemispherical NIR imagery. This project will produce a scientifically robust method to monitor leaf canopies at a high spatial and temporal resolution from trains. It seeks to quantify differences in the spectral reflectance of trees as they move from a full canopy to bare tree. This will enable the quantification of the amount of leaves falling on a daily basis which will be used to improve parameterisations in the Met Office leaf fall forecast model.
This applied project will suit a Geography / Environmental Science / Civil Engineering graduate with a background in Remote Sensing, Climatology or Ecology. If this sounds like it could be you, then feel free to drop me a line for an informal chat.
You will join a large (and growing!) research team of doctoral research students and post-docs based within the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research & Education.
