NORCAP is a world leading standby roster which consists of 700 highly
qualified women and men ready to deploy to international operations,
regional institutions and national authorities at short notice. In order
to rapidly respond to our partners? needs NORCAP is currently growing
its capacity within technical areas of relevance for Disaster Risk
Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA), particularly within
meteorology.

Job description

Strong climate services are vital to reducing vulnerability to climate
impacts. However, the majority of the world?s governments, communities
and business sectors, particularly in 70 of the most vulnerable and
least-developed countries, do not yet have access to usable and
scientifically credible climate information and forecasts. In 2009, The
Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) was established with a goal
to pool the expertise and resources of a number of organizations
together to design and produce knowledge, information and services that
support effective decision-making.

As a partner to the GFCS, NORCAP is now seeking experienced
meteorologists interested in a challenge out of the ordinary which
includes:

?Facilitation and coordination of project activities

?Provision of technical assistance and advice to national experts:

?to ensure that the data and information necessary for the development
of climate information is recorded according to standards and data for
the generation of climate services is available and accessible.

?to enable tailoring of climate information products and services to the
needs of various user groups at the national and sub-national levels.

?Networking with relevant stakeholders at all levels (ministries and
other state institutions, donors, NGOs, local communities and private
sector)

?Capacity building of national staff

?Ensure facilitation of dialogue between users and providers of climate
information and improve products and services based on feedback from users

?The Meteorologist will work under the direct supervision of the WMO and
GFCS partners

Qualifications

?Advanced university degree in meteorology, environmental sciences or
related discipline

?At least 5 years of working experience in national or international
projects/programmes in the field of meteorology

?Experience in organizing workshops and conducting training sessions,
preparing technical report and communication material

?Good interpersonal skills with experience in networking with partners
at all levels

?Experience from working with or in international and UN organizations

?Demonstrated written, analytical, presentation, reporting and computing
skills

The Department of Soil, Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences
at the University of Missouri-Columbia is seeking applicants that
wish to pursue a PhD in Atmospheric Science starting spring 2015.
The Graduate Research Assistantship is supported by the National
Science Foundation EPSCoR Track I award to the state of Missouri.
The assistantship is a half-time appointment and includes health
insurance and a tuition waiver. The successful applicant will be
heavily involved in statistically downscaling climate model output
with a focus on projections of future temperature, precipitation,
and soil moisture in Missouri and surrounding areas.

Applicants must possess (or expect to possess by spring 2015) a
master's degree in atmospheric science, geographical science,
earth science, or a related field. Experience with statistics,
computer programming, and GIS software is essential. Strong skills
in oral and written communication are also required. Successful
applicants will be expected to work both collaboratively and independently
to reach the project goals. The position will remain open until filled but
preference will be given to applicants who apply by October 26 2014
and are interested in starting in the spring 2015.
