Postdoctoral Scientist (m/f, SAS2014-18)
with a strong background in climate modelling and analysis, numerical mathematics, or computational science. The employment is conditional on final approval of the project.
Within the department "The Atmosphere in the Earth System", the successful applicant will establish and improve the atmospheric general circulation ICON model. His/her tasks will be the development and analysis of a gravity wave (GW) permitting version of the ICON model. The analysis will focus on case studies and the relationship between GWs and their sources. The task will be performed in close collaboration with partners from several other German research institutions.
A PhD in applied mathematics, meteorology, oceanography, physics, or computational science is required for this position. Previous working experience in and/or in-depth understanding of the modelling of convection and atmospheric dynamics is of advantage. The applicant should additionally have expertise in scientific computing, including programming skills (Fortran or Unix-type platforms and shell scripting).
The MPI-M is located in the heart of one of Europe's most liveable and vibrant cities. It provides a highly international and interdisciplinary environment for conducting scientific research as well as access to state-of-the-art scientific facilities. For further information, please contact Dr. Hauke Schmidt (hauke.schmidt(at)mpimet.mpg.de) or Dr. Elisa Manzini (elisa.manzini(at) mpimet.mpg.de). Senior Research Associate in Atmospheric Chemistry Modelling
School of Environmental Sciences, University of East Anglia
Applications are invited for a Senior Research Associate in the Centre for Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA). This is an exciting opportunity for someone who is interested in the technical challenge of modifying and running a 3D global atmospheric model and the scientific challenge of understanding the changing chemical composition of the northern hemisphere troposphere over the last 60 years.
Experience in atmospheric science and numerical modelling and ideally hands-on experience with regional or global 3-D models (especially UM-UKCA) is highly desirable for this post, although candidates are not expected to be fully versed in all of these areas. Candidates with a PhD in atmospheric or related sciences (or equivalent experience) are encouraged to apply.
This is a collaborative project with the University of Cambridge, involving staff from the National Centre for Atmospheric Science.
You must have a degree in atmospheric science or a related field and be able to fulfil the essential elements of the personal specification.
This full time post is available from 1 November 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter for a fixed term period of 3 years.
Closing date: 12 noon on 3 October 2014.
Further particulars and an application form for this post (RA1111) can be obtained from https://www.uea.ac.uk/hr/vacancies/research.
To informally discuss the post please contact me (c.reeves@uea.ac.uk).
Regards,
Claire
