The Met Office is a world-leading weather and climate service and we're continuously developing innovative ways to enhance and optimise our capabilities. Technology and science go hand-in-hand to drive our success. Your technical skills can help us develop the cutting edge models and systems that will deliver reliable and timely weather and climate information to our customers. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a world-class organisation and contribute to developing and improving the software that supports the science behind everything we do.

Your skills and experience will determine the level at which you join us. You will have a degree in a subject where you have built up strong programming skills. Alongside experience of developing and maintaining software, you understand complex software applications.

You have experience of developing or maintaining codes in Python, Fortran, C /C++ or SQL ideally in a scientific context, and you have scripting experience in Python, Perl or Unix shell. Some high performance computing experience is desirable but not essential.

You are confident working and developing on Linux or UNIX systems. You're able, or can show the potential, to provide technical leadership, influence other teams and communicate effectively with scientists.

The role

Joining our Operational Verification team, you'll design, develop, support and maintain the systems used to generate vital verification statistics, which are increasingly important in helping us further improve the accuracy of our weather forecasts.

We're looking for a Scientific Software Engineer to join us at one of three levels, depending on experience: Foundation Scientific Software Engineer, Scientific Software Engineer and Senior Scientific Software Engineer. Whichever level you join us at, you'll ensure our scientists can accurately verify the data generated using various observation types. Understanding their requirements will be fundamental to your role as you'll inform the definition and delivery of forecast verification to best suit their needs. Day-to-day, you'll monitor verification systems and evaluate their performance, but the majority of your time will be spent on new system development using languages, such as Python, Fortran and SQL. With a varied and diverse workload, you'll multitask between maintaining and developing several projects concurrently, while resolving users' issues. You will also be responsible for our Oracle database, which holds verification data, and you'll act as a link between the database administrators and scientists, monitoring its usage and ensuring it remains suitable for users' needs.

Collaboration will be key to your success. You'll work with teams around the Met Office and will act as a key point of support for your internal customers accessing verification programmes and databases, liaising with colleagues at all levels.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

Foundation Scientific Software Engineer

1. Evidence of developing and maintaining software, showing an aptitude to understand complex applications and to learn to adapt them.

2. Evidence of developing or maintaining software in Python, FORTRAN (or C/C++) or SQL.

3. Experience developing on Unix or Linux systems.

4. Demonstrated ability to work on technical tasks with supervision.

5. Demonstrated ability to work well within a team and to communicate effectively with technical and scientific colleagues.

Scientific Software Engineer

1. Demonstrated experience of developing and maintaining complex software systems and showing an aptitude to understand and adapt existing applications.

2. Demonstrable experience of developing or maintaining complex scientific codes in Python and an understanding of FORTRAN (or C/C++) or SQL.

3. Demonstrable experience developing code for Unix or Linux platforms.

4. Demonstrated ability to work on complex technical tasks with general supervision and the ability to use discretion in identifying and solving complex problems.

5. Demonstrated ability to work well within a team and to communicate effectively with technical and scientific colleagues.

Senior Scientific Software Engineer

1. Significant experience of designing, developing or maintaining complex software systems to the level of expert with the ability to mentor others.

2. Demonstrated advanced expertise in Python and a good understanding of FORTRAN (or C/C++) or SQL in a Unix or Linux environment.

3. Evidence of strong working knowledge of configuration management software and of reviewing and managing code implementation, including evidence of influencing and inputting to process improvement.

4. Demonstrated ability to work on complex technical tasks with little supervision and to take ownership of problems or activities.

5. Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership within a team and to influence other teams including technical and scientific colleagues.

For all levels

1. Degree or equivalent at level 2:1 or above in a physical science, mathematics or computing subject.

2. A broad understanding of relevant scientific areas required to allow the applicant to communicate effectively with scientists and to understand scientific requirements of technical work.

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

1.Database skills, preferably Oracle based.

2.Experience helping colleagues with technical problems.

3.Scripting experience (Python, Perl or Unix shell)
