We need a talented and imaginative scientist to carry out research on the
interaction of ice sheets and climate and the consequent changes in
sea-level during the last glacial cycle.
You will conduct novel Earth System model simulations of climate and ice
sheet change and evaluate them against proxy observations, in order to
improve scientific understanding of how the climate system works on
millennial timescales.
You will have:
- PhD in physical or mathematical science
- Strong scientific analytical ability, creativity and self-motivation
- Interest in paleo climate and climate change science
- Experience in computer programming and data analysis

Assistant Professor, Department of Geography
Tenure-track faculty position available August 21, 2015.
Responsibilities: teach undergraduate and graduate courses in applied
meteorology, climatology, and other introductory geography courses;
develop quality research agenda in the field(s) of specialization;

Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. in Physical

Background
The Met Office, as a world leading authority in meteorology, produces and delivers weather forecasts from a range of deterministic and ensemble numerical weather prediction models, which are used to generate a wide array of products to deliver to customers worldwide. Verification of both model data and an increasing range of forecast products is currently carried out to help further improve forecast accuracy, to assess corporate performance through the production of forecast accuracy Business Performance Measures and to demonstrate the value of the forecast products to existing and potential customers.
The Operational Verification team are responsible not only for developing, supporting and maintaining the verification systems used to generate verification statistics but also to work with customers to demonstrate value and help them gain the most from the forecast service they receive. There is an increasing range of forecast products produced from both model data alone and by forecasters. Verification is important to demonstrate the value of forecasts to customers in both the marketing process to encourage new business and to reassure current customers that the required level of accuracy is being maintained.
Job Purpose
To apply scientific and technical knowledge to contribute to the development of the verification systems to produce appropriate verification measures, interpretation and analysis for customers.
Job Responsibilities
Liaise with customers to understand their requirements and inform the definition and delivery of weather forecast verification best meeting their needs.
Provide interpretation and analysis of verification results to customers and customer representatives.
Contribute to the further development and implementation of a verification system, delivering forecast verification for raw model data, post-processed model data and model and forecaster products.
Develop and implement new and improved verification techniques.
Develop better tools and facilities to monitor and investigate model forecast deficiencies.
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
Foundation Scientist
1. Degree or equivalent at level 2:1 or above in a physical science, mathematics or computing subject or demonstration of equivalent experience.
2. Demonstrates an ability to apply a broad scientific knowledge to specific problems and scenarios. Evidence of the ability to learn and apply simple technical and analytical techniques to basic scientific problems.
3. Experience of developing and testing software showing an aptitude to understand complex applications and to learn to adapt them.
4. Experience of developing scientific codes in Python, FORTRAN, SQL, C or C++.
5. Able to demonstrate the ability to work on technical and scientific tasks with supervision.
6. Demonstrated ability to work well within a group or team and to communicate effectively with colleagues.
Scientist
1. Degree or equivalent at level 2:1 or above in a physical science, mathematics or computing subject with a relevant PhD or equivalent research experience.

1. Database skills, preferably Oracle based.
2. Knowledge of verification metrics and experience using statistics.
3. Scripting experience (Python, Perl or Unix shell).
4. Experience of scientific or technical report writing.
Additional Supplementary Information
The Verification systems are written mainly in Fortran, with some Python and Linux shell scripting with most plotting carried out in matplotlib.
There will be an opportunity to learn about the underlying formulation of the forecast model systems and to perform studies with them.

The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California,
Irvine (UCI) invites applications for a Lecturer with Potential for
Security of Employment ("PSOE"). This position is a full-time faculty
position for individuals who wish to focus their careers on teaching and
service. Lecturer PSOEs are members of the University of California
Academic Senate and have all the usual benefits of Senate membership,

The position will involve teaching undergraduate classes in a diverse
range of subjects such as atmospheric and ocean science, hydrology,
