Post-doc positions in Groovy Crystals, a project on the control of crystal nucleation at the University of Leeds
This 36 month position is one of two postdoctoral positions funded by a ?1 million Engineering
and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) grant to study crystal nucleation
from vapour, from liquid and from solution on surfaces. State-of-the-art techniques
will be used to fabricate nanoscale surface features such as pits, grooves and
trenches with undercuts. The project will relate the density and rate of crystallisation
of different substances, including ice, to the type of feature and will use these findings to establish
criteria for the design of good nucleants, or crystallisation promoters. The breadth of
the experiments will establish the extent to which optimisation of nucleation by
surface features differs between vapour, liquid and solution and the differences
between systems of simple organic molecules, water, and inorganic salts
(electrolytes).
You will work as part of a collaborative team involving researchers from the School of Earth and
Environment (Ben Murray), the School of Physics and Astronomy (Hugo Christensen) and the School of Chemistry (Fiona Meldrum).

Colleagues,
We're seeking to fill a position with Innovim who would support two of our
activities at NOAA/NWS/NCEP Climate Prediction Center in College Park,
Maryland, USA.
The tasks includes:
1) Assisting in activities related to formulating a hybrid
dynamical-statistical prediction system based on the North-American
Multi-Model Ensemble (NMME) system to be incorporated into the NOAA
Hurricane Season Outlook (HSO). The candidate will work with CPC staff in
generating a hybrid dynamical-statistical prediction system for hurricane
season prediction utilizing the NMME prediction suite and also participate
in making the special high resolution CFS prediction runs and the
accompanying tropical storm analysis done in timely manner for issuing the
HSO in May and August. The candidate will also work with various NCEP
operational prediction suite and perform diagnostic evaluations of the NCEP
GFS and CFS real time prediction for CPC's extended range forecasts.
2) Assist in developing and implementing a Week 3-4 outlook for temperature
and precipitation over the United States. The individual will work with CPC
staff to transition a statistical model into an operational forecast
environment and also explore statistical methods to combine dynamical model
forecasts, such as those from NMME and from the Climate Forecast System
(CFS), with empirical tools. Also, the candidate will explore the
feasibility of providing forecasts on extremes for Week 3-4.
