Hi Please can you this job on the met jobs list?

Faculty of Environment
School of Earth and Environment

National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS)

water@leeds Research Fellow in Moist Convection and Future Rainfall

Fixed term 36 months, available from 1 December 2014

Predicting future rainfall is a global priority for atmospheric science, but until now attempts have been hampered by the inability to model the rain-generating moist convection over large enough domains and long enough periods to allow the convection to interact with larger scales. Recent advances in computing have now made this possible, opening up an exciting field of opportunities.

We require an independent, creative and enthusiastic postdoctoral research scientist, who is keen to develop understanding of projections of future rainfall, studying how moist convection interacts with larger-scale flows, the implications for projections and the implications for modelling convection. The researcher will be part of Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science (ICAS) and water@leeds and linked to the National Centre of Atmospheric Science (NCAS) via the Principle Investigator (PI) John Marsham, as well as the Met Office via the University's academic partnership. Part of this post (10%) would be dedicated to supporting interdisciplinary initiatives across water@leeds and supporting the delivery of water@leeds strategy.

The core research objective is to develop a better understanding of how the representation of convection in models affects predictions of rainfall and use this to improve predictions of rainfall under climate change. The project would initially focus on tropical regions, building from expertise in this area. The core water@leeds strategy support would involve developing new interdisciplinary links across campus and supporting major interdisciplinary funding bids. The research will involve working with others across ICAS, NCAS and the Met Office, requiring excellent communication skills.

ICAS is one of the world leading centres for research on the atmospheric science, meteorology and climate. water@leeds is an inter-disciplinary hub for water research, the largest interdisciplinary water research centre in any university in the world, where for many projections of rainfall are a key uncertainty. You will join an enthusiastic and motivated School, which aims to achieve the highest standards in its research and teaching.

You will have a PhD (or be close to submitting) in some aspect of meteorology or atmospheric science, experience with numerical modelling and using observational data, analysis and visualisation of atmospheric datasets. Experience with programming on a UNIX/Linux operating system is essential. You will analyse data and simulations, running new major new simulations, and be able to contribute to field campaigns. You will publish high quality science in international journals and have excellent team work and communication skills. You will be encouraged to contribute to proposal development and it is anticipated that this post could be extended if suitable funding were available.
