Technology and Science at the Met Office
The Met Office is a world-leading weather and climate service and we're continuously developing innovative ways to enhance and optimise our capabilities. Technology and science go hand-in-hand to drive our success. Your technical skills, combined with your scientific understanding, can help us develop the cutting edge models and systems that will deliver reliable and timely weather and climate information to our customers. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a world-class organisation and contribute to developing and improving the software that supports the science behind everything we do.
Challenging, technically-stretching work
Now is a particularly exciting time to join us as a scientific software engineer. We work with our scientists to develop and use models of the atmosphere, land and oceans, weather and Right now, and over the coming months and years, we've an array of complex and technically-stretching projects to complete - projects that will see you collaborate and work closely with our world-leading scientists.

For example, we're constructing a prototype Environmental Prediction system to improve our UK weather, hydrology and ocean forecasting. We're completing the migration of our models to the Rose system which manages modelling system workflow on the supercomputer. We're developing the replacement for the Met Office Unified Model (UM), a task that encompasses system architecture design, assessment of new tools and techniques, and analysis of code performance on the next generation of supercomputers, to solve a complex scientific requirement. And we're building the next-generation global Earth System Model - a project that will enhance our climate change projection capability. Of course, these are just a few examples of the type of work you can expect here.
Collaboration is key to success at the Met Office. As well as working with other teams at the Met Office many of our tasks involve working with the UK academic community and with international partners.

We are looking for a Scientific Software Engineer to join us at one of two levels, depending on experience: Foundation Scientific Software Engineer or Scientific Software Engineer (SSE)
The person
First and foremost, you thrive on intellectually-demanding, technically-challenging work. You're an analytical problem-solver. With a creative and enquiring mind, you will always find a solution. You are not afraid to challenge the norm.

Your skills and experience will determine the level at which you join us.

You'll need to have the following essential skills, abilities and qualifications to be considered for the role:
1. Bachelor's degree or equivalent, at level 2.2 or above, in a physical science, mathematics or computing subject or equivalent experience.

2. Experience of developing or maintaining software, in a high-level language such as Fortran or C, showing an aptitude to understand complex applications and to learn to adapt them.

To be considered for Scientific Software Engineer (SSE):
Experience of developing or maintaining complex modelling software in a high-level language such as Fortran or C, with limited supervision, demonstrating breadth and depth of understanding.

3. Experience of developing code on Unix or Linux systems.
To be considered for SSE:
Demonstrates the ability to work with the platforms, tools and languages required in the post. A good grounding in Fortran and/or C/C++ and an understanding of scripting languages coupled with experience of developing code within a Unix and/or Linux operating system environment.

4. To be considered for SSE:
Experience of developing or maintaining scientific codes within a formal configuration management process.

5. The drive to be able to see complex technical tasks through, from initial analysis to a robust implementation in an operational environment.

6. Ability to work in a united way with scientists and technical staff both within the team and outside of the immediate team to deliver code improvements.

7. An understanding of relevant scientific areas required to allow the applicant to communicate effectively with scientists and to understand scientific requirements of technical work.

If you've any of the following desirable criteria, that's even better:
1. Experience of using High Performance Computers to run scientific applications
2. Experience of developing code for use on High Performance Computers using MPI or OpenMP
3. Experience with one or more dynamic language and/or shell script: Python, Perl, Bash etc.
What we can offer you
You will be challenged, fascinated and rewarded as you work on demanding and cutting-edge scientific problems, and provide technical solutions that make a valuable contribution to our weather and climate capabilities. We will invest in your development to help you grow with the Met Office. We can offer you a competitive pension, opportunities for flexible working, performance-related pay schemes, some great benefits as well as 25 days' holiday, which increases to 30 days' holiday after 5 years. Based in our award-winning Exeter headquarters, you will have world-class facilities all around you.
