PhD Studentship in Atmospheric Science, National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), New Zealand, and the University of Bremen, Germany
NIWA maintains a strong programme of research in atmospheric composition, with a focus on ozone and greenhouse gases. It provides backbone information to the international community on composition of the lower and middle atmosphere in the New Zealand and Antarctic regions. As part of this commitment, NIWA operates world-class observatories at its Lauder (South Island, New Zealand) and Arrival Heights (Antarctica) sites, and is also involved in international efforts to model atmospheric composition and climate.
In collaboration with the University of Bremen and the Alfred Wegener Institute, NIWA is offering a PhD Studentship in Atmospheric Science. This project will involve the analysis and assimilation of a range of ozone measurement types made at Lauder, NZ, (i.e. vertical profiles from LIDAR, microwave radiometer data and ozonesondes; total column estimates from Dobson and UV spectrometers; and in situ data from surface gas analysers, etc.). These will all be combined, along with temperature and humidity data, into site atmospheric state best estimates (SASBE) of the vertical ozone profile above Lauder. These best estimates will improve our understanding of the atmosphere above the site and be used for intercomparison with satellite-based estimates and chemistry-climate models. As this work can be applied to other GRUAN (GCOS Reference Upper Air Network) measurement sites, collaboration with the GRUAN Lead Centre in Lindenberg is also expected. The student will have the opportunity to learn statistical methods used in data analysis and modelling. At the end of the PhD research, the student will have an in-depth understanding of our ozone and meteorological measurements along with their use in atmospheric science. The student will also gain valuable experience in writing and communicating results in the scientific literature. Furthermore, as part of the PhD research the student will gain practical experience by helping with the measurement programme at Lauder.
We are looking for a motivated graduate of atmospheric science, chemistry, physics, mathematics, or a related subject. The student will have a strong numerical background and will be familiar with programming. A background in atmospheric science would be an asset but is not required. The student will have a good command of English (spoken and written). The student will be registered at the University of Bremen and spend some of their time at Lauder. Informal inquiries can be made to Dr Richard Querel. For some further information about the site and science:

Please submit your CV to Dr Richard Querel (richard.querel@niwa.co.nz<mailto:richard.querel@niwa.co.nz>) or Dr Markus Rex (markus.rex@awi.de<mailto:markus.rex@awi.de>). Assessment of applications will commence on 1 November 2014 and will continue until the position is filled.
