Hello,

The Atmospheric Science Program in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee invites applications to our graduate program at the M.S. and Ph.D. levels. Both research and teaching assistantships are available for study beginning in Fall 2015.

Our program is led by seven faculty members with research specialties that include climate dynamics, cloud physics, air pollution meteorology, mesoscale processes, tropical cyclones, and related topics across the atmospheric sciences. Students benefit from fruitful research collaborations with the School of Freshwater Science, the first graduate program of its kind in the United States, and the Dept. of Mathematical Sciences, in which our program is housed. Our program emphasizes student development through a low student-to-faculty ratio and has been successful in placing recent graduates in gainful employment in academia, the private sector, and at operational forecast centers.

Application instructions and a listing of open graduate research opportunities are available at http://brock.math.uwm.edu/. Prospective students interested in the research of a particular faculty member are encouraged to contact that faculty member to discuss potential research opportunities. Applications received by 31 January 2015 will receive full consideration for all available assistantships.

For more information about the Atmospheric Science Program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, please contact Prof. Clark Evans (evans36@uwm.edu?<mailto:evans36@uwm.edu>, 1 (414) 229-5116).

Background
MetOffice@Reading consists of around 20 Met Office scientists who are located in the world renowned Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading. The MetOffice@Reading Mesoscale Modelling Research group is part of Atmospheric Processes and Parametrizations, and is concerned with scientific research which underpins the development high-resolution versions of the Met Office Unified Model, a world-leading modelling system for weather and climate prediction. The three main areas of the group's research are the representation of convection, predictability, and urban effects in convective-scale models. This job relates to urban effects and involves close collaboration with the strong urban meteorology group within the Department of Meteorology. The purpose of the job is to improve the representation of the meteorology of urban areas in the Unified Model. This will include developing the Met Office Reading Urban Surface Exchange Scheme (MORUSES) with a view to implementation in the configurations of the model and developing new schemes for use in very high (sub 1km) models of cities such as London. A specific emphasis will be to also apply this to urban areas in East Asia as part of the Met Office work with China. An important aspect of the job is to build on collaborations with scientists at the University of Reading and pull through scientific developments into the Unified Model system.
Job Purpose
To improve the representation of urban areas in current and future forecast models with specific emphasis on modelling London and cities in East Asia.

Job Responsibilities
To improve the representation of urban meteorology in Met Office models.
To develop a definitive version of the MORUSES urban surface parameterisation for use in the UKV, other similar models elsewhere in the world and newer, higher resolution research models.
To set up and test numerical experiments with the Unified model at 1.5km and higher resolutions in order to assess the effects of changes to the urban surface scheme.
To work closely with university colleagues to use observational data gathered over London to address the above aims.
To establish and grow collaborative research in urban meteorology with scientists at the University of Reading and with the wider academic community.
To contribute to the presentation and publication/documentation of the Met Office@Reading team's work in order to communicate advice and/or maintain our scientific/technical capability and integrity and/or to promote our reputation.
To contribute to the writing of their job plan to support the research and development programme.
Essential Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
1. A PhD or equivalent experience in urban meteorology with a network of contacts within the field of urban meteorology.
2. Practical experience in the use and development of the Met Office Unified Model, including demonstrable expertise in the designing and running complex experiments relevant to the field of urban meteorology.
3. Experience in evaluating and developing urban parametrization schemes by comparison with observational data.
4. Experience of communicating research results via conferences and peer reviewed papers.
5. Evidence of the ability to coordinate major research projects involving multiple institutions.
6. Evidence of ability to foster collaboration and work well with people to build partnerships.
Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Abilities
1. Strong computing skills - experience in Fortran, Unix and use of High Performance Computing to investigate complex scientific subjects.

Additional Supplementary Information
The job will be based in the Met Office unit at Reading University (MetOffice@Reading) but will require interaction with scientists based at Exeter HQ. As such travel to Exeter will be required (mostly day trips but with occasional longer stays).

Kind regards
Shelly
