The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain.
It employs approximately 500 people working on the sustainable use and protection of the landscapes and habitats and a responsible approach to handling natural hazards.
The Research Unit Mountain Hy-drology and Mass Movements develops novel operational hydrological forecast systems.
As part of the new National Research Program "Energy Turnaround" (NRP 70) and in close collaboration with the Climate Prediction Team of the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss we are looking per December 1st 2014 for a
PhD Student "Hydrometeorological Ensemble Predictions for Improved Hydropower Operations"
You work on the implementation of an extended range (monthly to seasonal) hydrometeorological forecast system as a tool for optimizing hydropower exploi-tation. You will prepare meteorological input for the hydrological prediction sys-tems by evaluating appropriate ensemble downscaling methods with probabilistic verification measures. You will implement then a multi model en-semble for hydrological predictions in complex topographic areas and evaluate its prediction skill to reference approaches. The system will be used to quantify the added value of assimilating information on snow-water equivalent and dis-charge. You work in a network of scientist and collaborate with practitioners to understand the user needs.
You hold a master from a technical university and are focused your academic education in environmental sciences, earth sciences or applied mathematics. We are looking in particular for a personality with in-depth knowledge on ensemble forecasting, meteorology/climatology and water resources systems, sta-tistics and programming (Fortran and R) and you are familiar with the Alpine area. Your workplace will be shared between WSL (Birmensdorf) and MeteoSwiss (Z?rich Airport). You are highly motivated to apply your know-how to solve current scientific questions and contribute to future hydropower manage-ment. You are fluent in English and have preferably already some experience in writing and publishing scientific work.
Konrad Bogner, phone +41 (0)44 739 24 95, will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information.
