Scientist/PostDoc (m/f) - SAS2014 - 24

with a strong background in numerical modelling and sea-ice physics. Within the department, the successful applicant will be part of a team working on the development and implementation of a thermodynamic/dynamic sea-ice model in the framework of the ICON ocean model.

A Ph.D. in meteorology, oceanography, physics, mathematics, or a related area is required for this position. Excellent skill in programming (Fortran) is a prerequisite. Experience in code development for numerical models in geophysical fluid dynamics is an advantage as well as experience with sea-ice models and numerical schemes on unstructured grids.

The position is initially offered for two year starting early 2015. An extension for another year is possible. Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E14), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientist and encourages them to apply and is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals.

For further information, please contact Dr. Johann Jungclaus (johann.jungclaus(at)mpimet.mpg.de) or Dr. Peter Korn (peter.korn(at)mpimet.mpg.de). Applications should be forwarded to the address indicated below. Information about the ICON model project can be found at: www.mpimet.mpg.de/en/science/models/icon.html.

The selection process will start on 1 December 2014 and will continue until the position is filled. Please submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of two references via E-Mail:

*Post-doctoral research position on aerosol processing by clouds***

The cloud-modelling group at the Institute of Geophysics, Faculty of
Physics, University of Warsaw invites applications for a full-time
post-doctoral position.

Aerosols and their interactions with clouds continue to contribute the
largest uncertainty to the estimate of climate change. The accurate
representation of complex two-way aerosol-cloud interactions in
numerical cloud models still poses an important challenge for accurate
simulation of climate change forcing estimates.

We are seeking a creative and independent candidate with a background in
atmospheric science. The successful candidate is expected to carry out
research on aerosol processing by clouds using novel particle-based
cloud microphysics models developed in our group that feature detailed
yet robust representation of aerosol, cloud and precipitation. The
project is carried out in co-operation with partners from NCAR and ECMWF.

The candidate is required to hold a PhD degree by the date of
appointment. Practical skills in data analysis and experience with
atmospheric modelling and/or aerosol/cloud microphysics are expected.
Scripting/programming skills and experience with open-source scientific
tools is an asset. A very good command of English is essential.

The position is fully funded by the Polish National Science Centre (NCN).

The post holder is expected to join our team for up to 18 months. The
offered net salary of EUR 1200-1500 is competitive for the cost of
living in Warsaw. The contract includes health coverage for Poland and
EU, contribution to the retirement fund, and 36 days of paid holiday per
year. The post holder will have access to travel funds for international
meetings/conferences.

Please direct the applications to prof. Hanna Pawlowska
(hanna.pawlowska@igf.fuw.edu.pl
<mailto:hanna.pawlowska@igf.fuw.edu.pl>). The applications should
include a CV detailing the candidate's experience and research track
record. A cover letter outlining the motivation and providing names of
two reference persons is also requested.

Job Description
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a postdoctoral researcher for research related to regional and global modeling with a focus on aerosol processes and their interaction with clouds. The selected candidate is expected to participate in the development of a framework for an aerosol subgrid variability scheme to reduce scale-induced uncertainty in simulating aerosols and their radiative forcing in GCMs. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work with a group of recognized scientists to quantify the uncertainty and sensitivity in aerosol-cloud interactions in climate model.

Minimum Requirements
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years from an accredited college or university.

Qualifications
A PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, or related fields is required. Candidates with experience in (1) regional or global climate modeling; (2) aerosol microphysical processes; (3) fluency in FORTRAN; and (4) fluency with LINUX operating system and parallel programming paradigms on high-performance computers are strongly preferred. Because visible scientific accomplishments are key to the success of our project team, the candidate must have demonstrated excellent communication skills as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at professional conferences. Proactive and timely publication is an essential requirement. A cover letter describing applicants? research experience and interests, and a curriculum vitae with a list of publications in referenced journals is required.

Equal Employment Opportunity
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is an Affirmative Action / Equal Opportunity Employer and supports diversity in the workplace. All employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, marital or family status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or genetic information.
