The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), a multidisciplinary center for Climate and Earth System research located in Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for

2 Post-Doctorates (f/m) ? 2014-25 ?

The Hans Ertel research group Clouds and Convection in the Department The Atmosphere in the Earth System carries out fundamental research with the objective to improve our understanding of and ability to represent and predict convective clouds. Our group also works in closed collaboration with the German Weather Service (DWD) being affiliated to the Hans Ertel Zentrum for Weather Research, a network between German research institutions and DWD. The Hans Ertel Zentrum for Weather Research is committed to support and train early career scientists.

One of the positions focuses on the interactions between the land surface and organized convective systems and the representation of such interactions in models using different grid spacing and treatment of convection. The second position aims at investigating processes influencing non-squall convective organization and its interplay with precipitation on different spatial scales. Both positions require conducting simulations with an atmospheric model run in various configurations and resolutions. Use of observations to complement the analysis is desirable. The results should be used towards improving the representation of such processes in coarser-resolution models.

Applicants should have

- a PhD in Meteorology, Physics, Geography, Geosciences or related fields

- expertise in scientific computing, including very good programming skills: (FORTRAN on Unix platforms)

- experience with data analysis and atmospheric modeling

- excellent communication skills in English

For further information on the positions, please contact Dr. Cathy Hohenegger (cathy.hohenegger(at) mpimet.mpg.de) and visit http://www.mpimet.mpg.de.

The positions are initially offered for three years pending final decision on the funding volume. Payment will be in accordance with experience following the German public service positions (TVoeD E13/14), which include extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service. The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientist and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.
The selection process will start on 15 December 2014 and will continue until the positions are filled. Preferred starting dates are early 2015 but later dates are possible. Please submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, and the names, addresses, and telephone numbers of at least two references via E-Mail: jobs@vw.mpimet.mpg.de as a single pdf-attachment with max. 5 MB only.

OCE Postdoctoral Fellowship - Ecohydrological Remote Sensing

The Position:
CSIRO offers PhD graduates an opportunity to launch their scientific
careers through our Office of the Chief Executive (OCE) Postdoctoral
Fellowships. Successful applicants will work with leaders in the field
of science and receive personal development and learning opportunities.

CSIRO Land and Water Flagship is seeking to appoint a highly motivated
postdoctoral fellow to develop new methods for estimating how vegetation
alters carbon allocation and structure in response to changes in
resource availabilities, particularly CO2, and how these vegetation
changes impact the water balance. The fellow?s role will be to: (1)
develop a generalised optimality based carbon allocation model; (2)
using this model, combine satellite-based measures of above-ground
vegetation structure with meteorological and hydrological data to make
inferences about the dynamics in below-ground structure; and (3) to
build this allocation model into an ecohydrological framework and make
national-to-global scale predictions of long-term CO2-induced changes in
water and carbon fluxes.
Specifically you will:

Under the direction of senior research scientists, carry out innovative,
high-impact research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where
possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
Build parsimonious (or top-down) biophysical modelling frameworks and
assess/validate these frameworks by analysing long-term
national-to-global scale remote sensing, climate and hydrological datasets.
Undertake regular reviews of relevant literature.
Produce high quality scientific papers suitable for publication in high
quality journals.

The Climate Research Lab in the Department of Geography at Simon Fraser
University (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada), led by Dr. Kirsten
Zickfeld, invites applications from prospective Master?s and Doctoral
students interested in pursuing climate change research using Earth
System models.

The Climate Research Lab pursues research in the following areas: (1)
Long-term effects of human-induced emissions of greenhouse gases and
aerosols on climate, (2) Reversibility of human-induced climate change,
(3) Feedbacks between climate and the carbon cycle, (4) Emission
trajectories and budgets compatible with avoiding ?dangerous? climate
change, (5) Climate tipping points. For further details see
<http://www.sfu.ca/geography/people/faculty/kirsten-zickfeld>.

Specific research projects will be developed in consultation with the
student.

Funding is available for 2 graduate student positions (2 years for
Master?s, 4 years for Doctoral students) in the form of research and
teaching assistantships starting in September 2015.

Students of all scientific backgrounds, particularly students with
training in climate and atmospheric science, oceanography, earth
science, physical geography, physics or related disciplines are
encouraged to apply. Strong quantitative skills and excellent oral and
written communication skills are expected. Experience in computer
programming is an asset.

For consideration, please send a Curriculum Vitae, a personal statement
(1*?*2 pages) describing your previous research experience and future
research interests, informal transcripts, and contact information (email
and phone) of 2*?*3 references to Dr. Kirsten Zickfeld (kzickfel@sfu.ca
<mailto:kzickfel@sfu.ca>).
