Organization: ES-Earth Sciences
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Earth Sciences Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher position focuses on evaluating X-ray computed tomographic images and other measurements from core data, hydrologic, and geophysical data to aid in understanding Arctic soil property distribution as a function of tundra geomorphology and providing associated information to land surface models. Numerous data sets will be analyzed and correlated to characterize the geophysical the hydrological properties of arctic soils. Some laboratory tests may be required. Results will be presented at conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
? Analysis of X-ray computed tomography image data to interpret Arctic soil/sediment properties
? Interpretation of core data (imagery, cryostructures and properties) in the context of Arctic ice wedge polygon and drained thaw lake basin geomorphology
? Ability to manage, manipulate and jointly interpret multiple data sets
? Use a medical X-ray CT scanner to CT scan incoming cores
? Perform simple laboratory tests such as bulk density and hydraulic conductivity.
? During the course of investigation, the candidate will present research at scientific conferences, as well as co-author and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
? Additional - Assist with proposal development and student training as needed.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS:
? Experience with image analysis is a key prerequisite for the position.
? Strong preference will be given to candidates with previous knowledge of:
- Arctic soils
- Soil characterization methods
? A recent Ph.D. in geological, hydrological, or computer sciences, with a background in image processing methods is expected in addition to a record of original and high-quality research is required.
? Ability to collaborate within a multi-disciplinary research team and good communications skills are also necessary.
? Preferred - Experience with Arctic soils and soil characterization methods.
? Preferred - Familiarity with Arctic geomorphology.
? Preferred - Familiarity with field geophysical methods (such as ground penetrating radar, electrical resistance tomography).

Dear Colleagues,
The Tropical Cyclone Research Laboratory (LACy) has an opening for a two-year postdoctoral position in the field of atmospheric science (hurricane modeling and forecasting) in R?union Island. The position is funded through the French ANR project ?SPICy?, which aims to develop a pre-operational forecasting system of coastal and inland floods during the approach and landfall of tropical cyclones. The work will be conducted at the French Weather Service (M?t?o-France) regional center in Saint-Denis de La R?union (Indian Ocean), France.
T he position is opened as of 1st MARCH 2015 . The deadline for receipt of applications is DECEMBER 15, 2014.
The successful applicant will develop NWP model configurations required to fulfill the objectives of the project. This includes:
- Producing ensemble forecasts of wind and pressure fields associated with tropical cyclones using the non-hydrostatic cloud research model M?so-NH (http://mesonh.aero.obs-mip.fr/).
- Participating to the development of the new operational, high resolution, NWP model ?Arome-Indian? that will be deployed in 2016 by the French Weather Service for operational tropical cyclone forecast in the SW Indian Ocean basin. The hired individual will be, in particular, involved in the deployment and improvement of the 3DVAR mesoscale data assimilation scheme of the model (https://ams.confex.com/ams/31Hurr/webprogram/Paper244069.html).
The candidate should have a PhD in atmospheric or environmental sciences, with strong statistical and programming skills. Experience in mesoscale modeling would be considered as an important additional skill. The applicant must speak and write English fluently and have good communication skills and publication records. The post-doctorate will be recruited for 24 months with a net monthly salary comprised between 2000? and 2400?, commensurate with experience. This includes social services and health insurance.
