Post-Doctoral Position on Modelling Arctic Air Pollution Distributions and
Impacts
The LATMOS (http://www.latmos.ipsl.fr) laboratory, located at the
University Pierre
and Marie Curie in the center of Paris (Jussieu campus), invites
applications for a
postdoctoral researcher funded by the European Union to start in early 2015.
The postdoctoral researcher will work as part of a large European Union
FP7 integrated project,
ICE-ARC (Ice Climate and Economics ? Arctic Research on Change,
www.ice-arc.eu, www.facebook.com/IceClimateEconomics) (2014-2017), that
aims to improve understanding of the multiple stresses involved in the
changing in the Arctic marine environment. A particular focus is on the
rapid retreat and collapse of Arctic sea ice cover and assessment of the
climatic (ice, ocean, atmosphere and ecosystem), economic and social
impacts of these stresses on regional and global scales. The project
includes the collection of new data such as vertical aerosol/cloud
distributions on buoys in the Arctic Ocean (IAOOS project, see
http://www.iaoos-equipex.upmc.fr/), regional/global climate and marine
ecosystem modeling, as well as the study of the socio-economic
consequences of climate change in the Arctic. LATMOS is also involved in
several other projects focusing on the Arctic such as the French ANR
CLIMSLIP (Climate Impacts of Short-lived Pollutants and Methane in the
Arctic) project.
Arctic aerosol distributions are not well simulated by current
chemistry-climate models, due to uncertainties in knowledge/treatments of
aerosol lifetimes and processing during transport with implications for
assessment of climate impacts. Aerosol-cloud interactions are also highly
uncertain. Within ICE-ARC the postdoc working at LATMOS will focus on
evaluating Arctic aerosol distributions and radiative impacts in the
regional model WRF-Chem. Simulations will be evaluated against available
satellite and in-situ data, such as IAOOS, and compared with results from
a global climate model. Potential impacts of Arctic air pollutants
(aerosols, ozone) on regional air quality, ecosystems, and climate to
local sources of pollution that may change significantly in the future
will also be examined. This may include the study of chemistry-climate
interactions driven by changing climate and sea-ice distributions.
The position is open for 18 months, initially, and there may be
possibilities to extend.
Qualifications and requirements for the position:
- PhD in atmospheric sciences, atmospheric chemistry, or a similar field
- Experience in atmospheric chemistry modeling / analysis of atmospheric
observations
- Programming skills in Unix/Linux, Fortran, and scientific visualization
programs (Matlab, IDL, and/or NCL)
- Good English language and writing skills
- Willingness to work in an international framework, and to attend
project/international meetings
Review of the applications will start immediately and will continue until
the position is filled. To apply, please send a detailed CV (including a
list of publications), a letter of motivation in English, and the email
addresses of two academic referees to Kathy Law: kathy.law@latmos.ipsl.fr.

satellite-based wind observations on numerical weather prediction.
Responsibilities will include developing code to generate simulated wind
observations and their errors and evaluating the simulated observations
in the OSSE. All work would be performed in close collaboration with
researchers in the GMAO's OSSE development group and other GMAO staff.
