University of Leeds
School of Geography and School of Earth and Environment

Research Fellow ? UK Atmospheric Greenhouse Gas monitoring using atmospheric data and transport modelling

Fixed term until 30 September 2016, to start as soon as possible

We are seeking an individual who will use Eulerian and Lagrangian (air parcel following) atmospheric chemistry and transport models and atmospheric greenhouse gas concentration data to provide estimates of UK budgets of the major anthropogenic greenhouse gases.

This work is part of the NERC consortium grant GAUGE (Greenhouse gAs Uk and Global Emissions) which aims at establishing the infrastructure for greenhouse gas emissions monitoring for the UK and involves several UK Universities. The atmospheric sampling programme is performed on a range of platforms including ships, tall towers and dedicated flights using the NERC FAAM aircraft. The successful candidate will analyse the data and design and apply appropriate estimation methods. The work will be guided and supervised by Prof. Emanuel Gloor in the School of Geography and Prof. Martyn Chipperfield in the School of Earth and Environment.

You will have a PhD in quantitative sciences (e.g. climate sciences, mathematics, or physics) by the start of the appointment, experience with geophysical fluid dynamics computer codes and ideally have experience with data assimilation methods. You should have a strong interest in environmental and climate change questions.

Researcher in surface modelling and data assimilation, reference 202
The research department of SMHI consists of about 100 researchers funded both internally and externally. We work normally in projects with focus on applied research, quality insurance and long-term perspective. The work environment is characterized by flexible working arrangements, responsibility and personal development. The unit "Meteorological Analysis and Prediction" conducts research and development of weather prediction models, assimilation of observations and applications of forecast data for Scandinavia and Europe. Today the group consists of 11 researchers. Information on the group can be found here: http://www.smhi.se/en/research/research-departments/analysis-and-prediction
We are seeking a researcher in the field of meteorology or related area who will strengthen our research activities within surface modeling and surface data assimilation. The work contains modelling and assimilation in our modelling system HARMONIE with the surface component SURFEX that aims at improved operational weather forecasts. Furthermore, the employed scientist will contribute to the development of related forecast products, e.g. regional reanalysis and road weather. During the first year, the work is coupled to the externally funded project UERRA on regional reanalysis for Europe.
Your profile
The announced position requires knowledge of the physical, mathematical, and numerical aspects of complex physical systems such as weather prediction models. The work will include scientific publishing, support for production in ongoing projects, and the creation / maintenance of national / international networks. Doctorate degree in natural science / mathematics is beneficial. In addition, the job requires experience and interest in programming, in working with large systems and with a lot of data. Software systems are developed in Fortran with future increased elements of C++. We use Unix / Linux on high-performance cluster computers as well as on desktop computers.
We attach great importance that you are goal-oriented and have a methodical approach. You should take responsibility for progressing your own work. As the work is done in close collaboration with the group of modelers at SMHI and with colleagues at other institutions within and outside Europe, high level of English is required both in spoken and written form.
