PhD in Physical Oceanography at the University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia
We are seeking a highly motivated student with a strong Maths and Physics background to join a group of physical oceanographers at the University of Tasmania (UTAS) and CSIRO. The PhD project will use recent observations and high-resolution numerical simulations to investigate physical processes governing the evolution of jets and eddies in the Southern Ocean, their interaction with topography, and resulting generation of internal waves and mixing. Results of the project will lead to the development of physically based parameterizations of momentum drag and mixing for global ocean models.
The project is part of the CSIRO-UTAS PhD Program in Quantitative Marine Science (QMS) and will be based in Hobart at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) at UTAS.
Students will also become part of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science an international research consortium of five Australian universities (University of Tasmania, University of New South Wales, Monash University, University of Melbourne, and The Australian National University) and a suite of outstanding national and international Partner Organizations. The Centre provides opportunities for travel and graduate student development. http://www.climatescience.org.au
A scholarship funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) is available for 3 years (with the option of up to 6 months extension). In addition, the QMS program offers elite top-up scholarships for 3 years.
More details on the PhD program, scholarships, and the application procedures can be found on the QMS program website: http://www.imas.utas.edu.au/qms
Please contact Dr. Maxim Nikurashin (Maxim.Nikurashin@utas.edu.au) for further information.
