1. CCI Postdoctoral Research Assistant
Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics (AOPP), Clarendon Laboratory,
Parks Road, Oxford

Grade 7: ?30,434 - ?37,394 p.a.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in remote
sensing aerosol and cloud properties of the Earth?s atmosphere. The post
is available initially for a fixed-term duration of 24 months.

This project will contribute to the Earth Observation Data Group role
within ESA?s Climate Change Initiative (CCI). The goal of this work is
to quantify cloud and aerosol amounts, processes, and properties
globally and to understand how these are changing over time. The
successful candidate will be involved in working with a team of
scientists at Oxford and RAL to deliver world-class data to the CCI in
complement to curiosity-driven research on clouds and aerosols. The
successful applicant?s work will involve data analysis and writing
journal articles.

Applicants should possess or be very close to obtaining a doctorate in
physics or a related field and have a good understanding of the physics
of aerosol and cloud in the atmosphere and aerosol-cloud interactions. A
general understanding of atmospheric radiative transfer will be an
advantage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate computing skills,
including knowledge of UNIX/Linux, IDL and/or Python, and Fortran 90.

The postholder will be expected to represent the Earth Observation Data
Group and present results at national and international meetings. They
will also have the opportunity to teach.

Please direct informal enquiries about the role to Dr Don Grainger
(grainger@atm.ox.ac.uk).

Only applications received via the University website before 12.00
midday on Wednesday 25 March 2015 can be considered. You will be
required to upload a brief statement of research interests, CV and
details of two referees as part of your online application.

2.NCEO Postdoctoral Research Assistant
Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics (AOPP), Clarendon Laboratory,
Parks Road, Oxford

Grade 7: ?30,434 - ?37,394 p.a.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in
infrared remote sensing of the Earth?s atmosphere. The post is available
initially for a fixed-term duration of 2 years.

This project will exploit data from the current IASI (Infrared
Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) instruments on the MetOp
satellites, and also data from recent and future instruments. The
principal task for the successful applicant will be to become familiar
with the MORSE Fortran software that was developed for the MIPAS
limb-viewing instrument and adapt it to work for nadir-viewing geometry,
including the handling of effects such as surface topography and
emissivity, and partial cloud-cover. The postholder will develop IASI
retrievals of temperature and composition as part of Oxford's
contribution towards NERC?s National Centre for Earth Observation.

Applicants should possess or be very close to obtaining a doctorate in
physics or a related field and have a strong background in infrared
remote sensing and inverse methods. Previous research in the atmospheric
sciences will be an advantage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate
computing skills, including the knowledge of UNIX/Linux.

The postholder will be expected to represent the Earth Observation Data
Group and present results at national and international meetings. They
will also have the opportunity to teach.

Please direct informal enquiries about the role to Dr Anu Dudhia
(dudhia@atm.ox.ac.uk).

Only applications received via the University website before 12.00
midday on Wednesday 25 March 2015 can be considered. You will be
required to upload a brief statement of research interests, CV and
details of two referees as part of your online application.
